Capitol Broadcasting's WCLY 1550 has been taken silent

As of 1/31, WCLY has been taken silent, citing financial and technical issues. Most recently the eastern half of the sports-formatted Buzz Sports Radio along with the weakened WDNC 620, a 104.5 FM translator oriented towards Chapel Hill and SW Durham, and a sub-channel on WCMC 99.9 The Fan, WCLY is easily one of the weakest AM signals in the market with 1kW days and only 7 watts nights on the upper end of the dial. Their tower site, on Maywood Avenue near the State Farmers Market, was rebuilt in 2011 after a tornado destroyed the former site but the tower had a noticeable lean a few years ago with some work being done adjacent to the site. The station, which signed on in 1962 as WNOH, has been through multiple call signs and formats.

Capitol Broadcasting has officially turned in the license for WCLY 1550.

I hate to see another AM go but it is difficult to imagine any format working on that terrible signal. Even during the day the signal really didn't cover Raleigh, its city of license. If Capitol Broadcasting couldn't make ago of it with their deep pockets and deeper community roots than WCLY deserved to die.

I wish the FCC would permanently open a filing window for the AM band. With a number of stations disappearing there might be room for some to improve their signal. Don't think there would be a big rush to file, but it might help some stations and communities.

This is a Head scratching to me because I’ve thought if an AM has a FM translator they have to keep it on to keep legal??

That'd be nice. I remember, back in late '95 and early '96, while in Raleigh for some schooling, hearing 'CLY doing Black Gospel 24/7. No kidding, one of our dorm mates kept it on all the time. Re: AM in general and I hate to say this, but IMHO, most AM stations these days, are place-holders/excuses for FM translators, if they have them, that is. If they don't I wonder how many radios have AM on them to hear them?

Is 'DNC still on? If so and they carry the same programming, that's justifiable/legal. I'm unfamiliar with the network, just going by what I saw up here.

WCLY was feeding the 95.7 translator (W239CK) as AAA "95-7 That Station", but that switched last year to a feed of a WRAL-FM's HD-2 channel.

WDNC is still on, but they downgraded its signal about a decade ago from 5kw directional day/1kw directional night to a non-directional 1.5 kw day/41 watts night from the tower of WDUR 1490 in Durham. They do feed a translator, 104.5 W283DE, which largely covers far southwest Durham, Chapel Hill, and Pittsboro. WDNC's 'Buzz" sorts programing is also fed on the HD-2 of WCMC 99.9.

Gotcha, thanks for the rundown. I used to be able to listen to 'DNC, even right outside Greensboro, back in the day. It wasn't as strong as 'PTF, but it was definitely listenable. When it was Summer and I was out of school (shows you how long ago this was LOL) I used to catch When Radio Was with Art Flemming at 1 PM daily, yeah buddy.

My father went to Durham in 1985 and I was in a store at Northgate Mall (so sad what happened) that had a cable channel with audio from WDNC. I couldn't believe how good that music was. It wasn't the first time I had heard a big band/nostalgia station, but I sure liked it.

Yeah, when I was in Raleigh for the first batch of schooling (this'd be back from like '82-'84 or so), I remember listening to 'DNC, with their classic music. I specifically remember hearing Slow Poke, from Pee Wee King, because I had it on a Country compilation I got for Christmas, one of those years.

Oh yeah, something I forgot to say, was, back in '95-'96, When Radio Was was on at like Midnight and even though I was in school again there in Raleigh, I stayed up to hear it, along with other dorm mates. Of course, I was a lot younger then LOL.

FM 99.9 was mentioned a while back. I remember them being a very weak signal in Raleigh, maybe even mono, with strange music and I believe it was licensed to Wilson. What's the main station doing there now? I believe one of the HD feeds the Sports network aforementioned, right?

If you’re referring to 20+ years ago you likely heard WKXB Burgaw-Wilmington, which used to be 100kW from Burgaw. They have been some form of classic hits/rhythmic oldies since 1999.

Around 2005 CBC bought a 99.9 signal in southern VA and moved it to Youngsville, signed on with a country format.

2008ish CBC bought the Burgaw signal, moved the license and transmitter south of Wilmington (Boiling Spring Lakes) and downgraded to a class B, then moved the Youngsville 99.9 to the WRAL-TV tower as a class B. It was flipped to sports talk around this time.

The 100kW WKXB was likely a frequent visitor to Raleigh. I know it covered the Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Clinton area decently.

Edit: it’s coming back to me now that there was a very weak 99.9 out of Zebulon or Wilson in the early 90s. I have no idea when it disappeared. WAHD maybe?

Edit: Google “WAHD 99.9” and you’ll find a post on Reddit about the station.

WAHD 90.5 was licensed to Wilson with an EDM format. it was heard in Raleigh on translator W260AB 99.9. The station was later bought by Calvary Chapel and was WXJC, then WAJC, and is now licensed to Zebulon as WVRD, rebroadcasting Liberty University's 'Journey' Christian AC format. W260AB was silent by the time Capitol began moving the then-Chase City, VA-licensed signal towards Raleigh, first licensed to Creedmoor and later Holly Springs. I am unsure if the license is still active on another channel.

Yeah, the latter, as in your edits, is the one to which I was referring. I'll check it out, thanks. As previously stated, I was in Raleigh in late '95 and early '96 and that's when I heard them. Also, thanks for the rundown.

Gotcha, thanks. They used translators that far back? HMMM. Just to clarify, I am once again talking about late '95 into '96. So, was the translator mentioned above in operation then or was it a standalone, strange music and poor signal (all to my ears) station on then?

Pardon my ignorance and forgetfulness, but, what's an EDM format?
