Cap'n Bill Passes on

Bill McLean was one of the first radio personalities I can remember becoming aware of as a child. I recall listening to him on KAKE AM (afternoons I think). He certainly influenced my decision to go into radio. Farewell Mr. Mclean.

Yeah, Cap'n Bill, Henry Harvey as Freddie Fudd & Santa, Tom Leahy as Major Astro, Frito Joe Hardy and Tales of Wells Fargo, Sammy Scarecrow. Now for a role model, kids get a big purple dinosaur!

I did a very long sit down with Mr MacLean (As he always pronounced it!) when I was at KDRB in Derby for a retrospective piece on KAKE's 25th anniversary, focusing on his career and the late John Froome. It was gold.

I especially remember him talking about so many of the live commercials and how they went wrong.

To meet someone at his age with so much enthusiasm for the business still, well, it told me that I made the right decision to stay with it all these years...
