With Thanksgiving, I missed the release of the November numbers. Survey period 10/10-11/6.

Sac's top 5:

1. KFBK (N/T): 8.9-10.2
2. KYMX (AC): 6.9-8.6
3. KSEG (Classic Rock): 6.9-6.6
4. KNCI (Country): 6.6.-5.5
5. KUDL (CHR) 3.7-4.0
5. KXJZ (NPR N/T): 4.0-4.0

Two books in a row at 4.0 for CapRadio News, continuing a streak that began suspiciously soon after my retirement.

More interesting, the weekly cume gap between #1 KFBK and #6 CapRadio News is the smallest I've ever seen it: 2,100 listeners (166,700 for KFBK, 164,600 for KXJZ).

Despite a couple of mid-3's books in the spring, CapRadio Music (KXPR) has been in the 1.2-1.3 range since June.

I would suspect that with the election over that a lot of these massive gains we see from KFBK (although it's always #1 anyway) and KXJZ will probably subside just a little bit. Thoughts MH?
 
For being the #2 commercial talk station, KSTE does pretty well in the 12+ with a 3.6. How they do in 25-54 may be a different story. KFBK, for as long as I can remember, since the late 80's, has almost always been at or near the top at #1.

Is Rush Limbaugh the one responsible for propelling KFBK to the top, back when he started with them?

Bill White is approaching ten years as KFBK’s PD (and my friend). A low book for him is like a 6.5. He’s had at least one 11 share. I fully expect ‘BK will still be a strong performer.

I have no idea how high KXJZ can climb, because I can only retire once.
 
CapRadio News (KXJZ 90.9) remains remarkably consistent in the just-released Holiday '24 book. Here's the trend, beginning in August:

3.5-3.6-4.0-4.0-3.9-3.8

And this time, KXJZ actually surpassed KFBK in cume (144,800 to 134,700). 'BK's TSL makes the difference, though, milking an 8.4 out of 10,100 fewer weekly listeners.

A nice bump for CapRadio Music (KXPR 88.9), moving 1.2-1.9. There was an emphasis on Christmas music in the last couple of weeks.

And---Kevin Doherty has left the building. Gary Vercelli, longtime host with deep jazz roots (he was at Saul Levine's KBCA) is the new CapRadio Music PD.

Personally, I feel KXPR would perform better if they focused more on the familiar classics. I’ve seen comments where a few people prefer KXPR to KDFC because KDFC is a sellout that plays only the big classics. The question would be which group financially supports more?

Incidentally, I worked at KSAC 1240 AM when it was classical from 1987 to 1991. The main selling point was that we played the classical hits where KXPR played more obscure pieces. We managed to get a 1.7 share at times and this was on a graveyard AM channel.

Still, despite my views on them needing to play the hits more and lighten up their presentation, I commend CapRadio for their efforts and believe the arts community in Sacramento is better off for it. I’m a frequent listener when I’m in Sacramento.

I don't have anything factual to back it up, but the impression I got in my three and a half years at CapRadio is that KXPR punches way above its weight when it comes to fundraising and donations.

Maybe if they let Jun back in the building to steal -- excuse me, misappropriate -- some more money, CapRadio can break a 5 share this year.

As much as I like to joke about how the numbers went down while I was there, Jun only got the GM gig about six weeks ahead of me arriving. Let's blame him instead.

The front row of the courtroom is gonna be very crowded with familiar faces at his trial.
 
The KXPR weekday classical program from 6 AM to 7 PM has a very nice mix of well-known and lesser-known music. The 3 local DJs covering that space have great knowledge and presentation. Jennifer Reason has a wonderful voice for radio. However, the weekend program is underwhelming, although Sunday Baroque may be OK. The evening jazz program is boring and repetitive. Unfortunately, the transmitter moved away from me last year. Now I rarely get adequate stereo reception; even mono is sometimes too noisy. Presumably, Cap Radio is now reaching more listeners.

Soon I expect great reception of KDFC. I can't judge it yet, but I've heard enough to hope the “resident artist” goes away.
