Capt Gus and Popeye show...

Does anyone from the San Antonio area remember anything about the "Capt Gus and Popeye Show" from the 1960's. Who was "Capt Gus"? How long did the show run and when did it finally leave the airwaves? I was in the live studio audience in 1966 and 1968. I hope that this is the appropriate area for this topic, as the "Capt Gus and Popeye Show" hardly qualifies as Classic TV.

IMO, this topic would have been appropriate for the Classic TV Board, but as a San Antonio institution, it's appropriate for this board as well.

I've never lived in San Antonio, so I don't know anything about the show, but here is a link to a discussion of Capt. Gus, at least some of which is apparently from someone at KENS: http://550underground.yuku.com/topic/964/t/Re-CAPTAIN-GUS.html?page=-1

From the linked discussion: Joe Alston played Capt. Gus from 1953 through 1979, when the show was canceled. Ironic that you bring up this topic now, as today is the 20th anniversary of Alston's death. He was 71.

Another possible resource is the book, Hi There, Boys and Girls! America's Local Children's TV Shows, by Tom Hollis. He covers local children's TV shows from all over the country. Your local library may have a copy or be able to get you a copy. Unfortunately, the book is no longer available online.

My mistake. What I meant to imply here is not that the book is unavailable for purchase online, but rather, that excerpts from the book, which used to be available online for free, are no longer.

University Press of Mississippi published the book, so they would certainly have it if it's still in print.

What a walk down memory lane. I had forgotten about this. I grew up in the 70's in SA and remember this program on KENS 5. Not sure if it was related to the same program but also recall KENS playing Bugs Bunny cartoons in the afternoon.
