Capt. Mel

Just read the sad news of Mel Berman passing today. Had the pleasure of knowing him at FLA years ago. A nice person and, by the way, great set of pipes!

He had among the smoothest pipes in the buisiness, even at 81.

The end of an era...

Yeah really. The best show on Saturday for years. AM talk radio on the weekend is teh sUx0rz. Mel's show was one of the highlights of the weekends.

I knew Mel back when 970 was over in the Jackson Street studios. Not only was he a great radio guy, he was just a terrific person to be around. He treated everybody from the biggest station brass to the janitor like good friends and colleagues. He was a good man, a good friend and a great radio guy who will be sorely missed.

:( Great guy, great show. Loved listening, and damn I was going to tune it in tomorrow on the way into work as usual. Heck listening last week, he sounded like his normal self.

WTVT is about to air a segment on the 10:00 news as I type this. Man we'll miss ya, Capt Mel.

Class ... And a wonderful legacy. There are some people in broadcasting who have found a way to make a living without maligning others. He was one of those people.

So sorry to hear that Mel has died. Mel and I used to go fishing out of Tarpon Springs way back in the Eighty's. I was a client who became a friend. Of course that was easy with Mel... he was such a friendly guy and truly a great fisherman. I think Mel could have spent all of his time out in the boat.

One story I have to tell... One morning while fishing about 15 miles offshore from Tarpon Springs, Mel and I hit the mother-load. His depthfinder spotted a large mass directly under the boat and we quickly dropped anchor and couldn't get our lines in fast enough. As the bait was dropping to the bottom we both got big hits and reeled up some beautiful grouper. Dropped the lines again and more hits and this kept happening for about an hour and a half. By that time Mel and I caught over 150 pounds (I kid you not) of fish and one actually had been bitten in half... we guessed sharks were stirring them up. We were both buzzing with excitement and exhaustion. All we could do is look at each other and smile. An incredible experience that I had the honor of experiencing with my old friend Mel Burman. Mel... I hope we have another chance to cross lines again maybe on the other side!!! – Ken Andruk
