Captain Bob on WHDH-TV5

In the late 60s TV38 did have a lot of ABC daytime. Barnabas Collins cracked open his coffin on Dark Shadows on TV38.not 7

WSBK-TV ("TV38") did carry Dark Shadows on a one-week delayed basis using a kinescope recording (black and white) that looked rather grainy. It wasn't until WNAC-TV (Channel 7) finally cleared Dark Shadows on January 13th, 1969, direct from the network (ABC) in color. Prior to 1/13/69, most Dark Shadows fans were able to get the show daily in color from nearby markets on WMUR/9 (Manchester, NH) , WMTW/8 (Poland Spring, ME/Mt. Washington, NH) and WTEV/6 (New Bedford/Providence) at 4:00 PM. Originally, WNAC ran movies at 4:00 PM, "The Money Movie" with Hank Bouchard as a companion to "Ed Miller's Two O'Clock Dialing For Dollars Movie".

I recall drawing along with Captain Bob when I was an ankle-biter. IIRC, the one key difference on his Saturday network show was the addition of a Ruff 'n' Reddy cartoon. Can anyone confirm or correct this?

Absolutely true. I remember it well.

Ruff 'n' Reddy debuted on NBC in 1957 with their own show, Hanna-Barbera's initial foray into television after their long tandem careers with MGM. The series lasted a year or two, then NBC made use of the individual episodes on Captain Bob's national broadcast.

A check of the Boston Globe TV listings shows that the ad could have appeared any time in 1958 or up until September 7, 1959 when "Bozo" took over the 5 PM slot. Looking at hose listings, I wonder how WNAC-TV managed to hold on to the "Mickey Mouse Club" after WHDH-TV signed in Nvember of 1957 on as the prime ABC affiliate for Boston ?

TV 38 and to a lesser degree ch.56 had a lot of NBC,CBS, and ABC shows that were not cleared from69-72.There was less CBS and ABC not cleared after the CVB/NAC affilate switch in March of 72.

When did WSBK-38 Start airing DARK SHADOWS?

I thought I read an article once stating that it was in August of 1956 that the Group W/Westinghouse radio stations affiliated with NBC dropped their affiliations.

When did WSBK-38 Start airing DARK SHADOWS?

According to TV Guides from June and July 1966 that I have, then WIHS-38 carried the show from the beginning. (Storer had just bought the station and the calls would be changed later that summer.) 38 carried a good chunk of both NBC and ABC daytime at the time. Here's the channel 38 schedule from Tuesday July 5, 1966:

12p Jeopardy (color) - this is the first show listed for the day for 38
12:30p Swingin' Country (color)
12:55p News Edwin Newman
1p Favorite Story
1:30p Lets Make a Deal (color)
2p Ray Milland
2:30p A Time For Us
2:55p News Marlene Sanders
3p Ann Southern
3:30p The Nurses
4p Dark Shadows
4:30p Where The Action Is
5p Buck Rogers
5:30p Cartoon Party

Getting back to Captain Bob for a minute...I recall he also did a once a week drawing segment on an evening program(was it called "Dateline: Boston"?). His drawing on those shows was always of something historical, be it a figure in history such as Washington or Lincoln, or, a historical scene, like the Paul Revere House or Bunker Hill Monument. Sidenote: I recall seeing the Captain a couple of times during the Grover Cronin Easter Parade in Waltham.

Robert 'Bob' Cottle was also co-creator of the Zoltan electromechanical fortuneteller device. It was an arcade amusement machine that, for a dime, told your fortune. Bob's voice was used as the voice of Zoltan the fortuneteller. A photo of the machine and an mp3 of the fortunes can be found at this link. http://arcadearchive.com/em/zoltan/zoltan.htm ( Hmmm...Zoltan seems to bear a likeness to the Captain.) Here's another link to more on Zoltan. http://www.pinrepair.com/arcade/zoltan.htm

When I was a wee lad in the mid fifties, I remember Captain Bob drew a character named Jasper and he did kind of an in house non-animated cartoon which was a favorite of mine when I was 7 or 8.

I remember when my daughter was little in the early seventies he still had a show on Saturday mornings. She drew along with him on his drawing of the day. One time she drew a really good picture of a dog. So I sent it in. We were both very disappointed when after a few weeks he hadn't displayed hers. I then realized while watching the credits that i was watching a show from several years earlier and that the show was no longer current.

Does anyone remember "Dirty Frank"?

I just discover this board. I've read the radio board for years.

Yes, he was a puppet character on "Jabberwocky" on WCVB-TV beginning on day 1 (3/19/1972) and continued on for a few years. I believe that virtually almost every person from the old WHDH-TV moved over to WCVB-TV. I believe that "Captain Bob" was seen on WCVB-TV a few years later as well.

Not all the on-air staff at WHDH-TV moved to WCVB-TV. Of the main M-F on air people Bob Copeland was passed over at first for Bob Ryan who would later go to WRC-TV. Reporters who were passed over included Lesley Stahl, George Forsythe, Andy MacMillan and his wife Rosemarie Van Camp. Roger Goodrich I am not certain- keep in mind that WCVB was building a news department and WHDH-TV was telling staffers do not sign with BBI. WCVB had hired Natalie Jacobson, Jim Boyd, Mike Taibbi and others as reporters.

Jack Hynes, John Henning, Don Gillis and Bill O'Connell all retained Bob Woolf as an agent and all signed with BBI just in case.

All IBEW 1228 techs on the TV signed moved to Needham. The radio techs did not fare as well with the exception of Pudge Flynn who Jess Cain made sure was taken care of.

Captain Bob did indeed wind up at WCVB. He also did a few shows at WXPO-TV in Lowell and in fact his WHDH-TV set was destroyed when after the power company cut power to the Lowell studios the pipes burst and flooded the studio.

If I'm not mistaken, Jobeth Williams(I think that was her name) was also on that show and she went on to have a decent career in movies. Anyone know who the voice of Dirty Frank was? Anyone who we might know? I remember watching that show with my daughter when she was little. She loved Dirty Fwank.

DirtyFrank appears at 1:45
