Captain Humble

Has anyone heard from Cap in the past week? Restaurant is locked up, he's not answering his cellphone. Friends are beginning to worry...Cap if you read this, please respond...just concerned!

Actually several of us have been quietly following and investigating this strange situation for over a week. I finally called the police in Slidell at 1:35 today so they could pass by and see what they could find out. Door locked, light on, window curtains drawn...for over a week. No word yet. Hopefully we'll know something soon.

Cap finally returned a call to Harry Gish. Apparently Cap had cell phone trouble the last few days. Tomorrow, Saturday the 29th is his last day of business at his legendary restaurant. Plans unknown. Stay tuned.

The whole way this went down stinks. We were worried and concerned and worried about Cap and even sent friends and family over, and he sends "goodbyes" via one outside contact. Goodbye Cap and thanks for not even e-mailing or calling Bob or me after organizing many many gatherings at your place...and on the verge of calling police to check on your safety. Now let me go wash my hands...

You might want to know the full story first.

I don't know the fellow personally, though have met him briefly a few times. However, his friends should find out what really happened before passing judgement. Perhaps there is a legitimate reason for his behavior.

Oh well, thought we were his friends. That's why we were concerned. I figured there were financial issues, but still no reason to ignore friends when extremely concerned. But to each his own I guess.

Still grateful for the past hospitality and seeing all at the gatherings...we'll have to find a new venue.

My last post on this issue...wishing all the best.

Hello: I am the Cap and would like to respond. First of all, last week was not smooth. The week began with internet difficulties and ended with some cell phone problems. Both of those matters ended quickly and I now have both services up. Some of my insurance money (loss of use) was being delayed and ultimately denied me because I didn't know about an objection that had to be answered, but my attorney quit and I wasn't even aware that I needed to appear in Court to answer the objection. I was a reFUGEE for 152 days (away from my home) and then in a trailer for exactly 2 and a half years. I am appealing the Court's decision before the Judicial Review Board, but in the meantime, I have used all monies available to me personally and am at the end of a long road. NONE OF THIS HAS BEEN FUN. I had a very high credit rating before Katrina and have built it back up. That afforded me the opportunity to stay afloat. But now I need a BAILOUT, not for trillions or millions, but for the monies that I was promised. Without that, I may loose everything I've tried to hold on to, not much, but everything, my car, my home and my business. Had I lost email and my cell phone, I asked one of my friends to notify all of my dear media friends of my situation. That was a safeguard. It hasn't been put into effect because I am still here. It might be in the future. Captain Humble's is open 11A-2P and 5P-8P Tues thru Sat. I have always had my doors open during those hours. I use my drapes to shield the front room from the sunshine. My email is working and my cell phone, too. Weerdo, why didn't you call or email me?. I had made no final plans. The restaurant remains open and if something happens, you'll be notified.
I just read this entire posting and am amazed at your attitude. I would never kick you when you're down. Not my style, but obviously is yours. Everything's o.k. now and nothing has happened. Please, my friends, keep me in your thoughts. The restaurant takes 26 or 27 hours a day and I'm not as young as I used to be (just turned 35 this yr). I am with you all and should I not be, I thought that plans should be in place. Guess I should have attempted a Professor Longhair Chicken Dinner to benefit myself. I'm sorry I had to lay my personal business on you all. We all have problems and normally I would keep them private, but Weerdo's comment above had to be addressed. I am going to put a Roast on for tomorrow and CAP's IS OPEN! Sorry for the "re-fried confusion".

Whew! Sorry if I over-reacted Cap, but we were really concerned...we luvs ya, and I did call and drop e-mails (did you get the one forwarded form Alan Perkins?). Glad you're still open and all is basically well, wishing you the best always!

And the best to you also. You're a very special person! And as I look back on this, i realize that an over-reaction is better than no reaction. Thanks, Cap!

C'mon guys, let's cut Cap some slack here. He's been a good friend to us all and we don't really know what he's going through to self-righteously judge him. Until we walk a mile in his shoes and see his situation as he does, let's give him the benefit of the doubt from the last couple of weeks. It's difficult to judge a man who has his back to the wall and may be just too proud or too embarrassed to admit the situation to his friends, and who may have decided to be absent for a few days to think it through and not be a burden on his friends. I've been there, in personal bankruptcy and other difficulties years ago, when I had *nothing* but those who cared for me and wanted to help. I will love and thank them to my grave for being there for me.

Cap has always been kind and most gracious to me and I think to most others too. He does appreciate the reunion lunches which actually may have just helped him a little in difficult times.

It's Christmas. Time to embrace old friends and help them in any way we can, despite any difficulties we may have of our own. Jesus instructed us to "feed the hungry" which meant to put the hardships of others ahead of our own concerns. It is the first rule of my own life.

Cap, I'm sure I speak for everyone...if you need us, we'll be there for you. And we'll be looking forward to our next reunion at your restaurant in the Spring.

Merry Christmas.
Bob Walker

Hell I'll buy a $20 spaghetti dinner and I'll have to drive over from LaPlace. Anything to help Cap! Glad to hear from you but sorry everything is a mess.

Gosh, I was bemoaning the loss of great stuffed artichokes, sloppy, delicious roast beef sammiches and of course, Cap's great stories......all for nothing! Yay, Cap! Me and Mrs. Fury will see you soon!

To paraphrase Mark Twain... the rumors of Cap's closing were apparantly greatly exaggerated.

When I heard that Saturday would be his "last day open" I went by there for lunch. Imagine my surprise as I asked him about it and discovering that I had just informed him of something he didn't know... that it was his last day.

Must have been one of those cases like when you get a group together and whisper something simple in the first person's ear. By the time it gets to the last person the story is completely different. Anyway, he told me of some of his future plans and not one of them involved closing the store. Great news!

By the way... the 1/2 mufaletta was great as always!!!

Cap,

Never have met you or know you personally, but I wish you the best as you sort through these difficulties life has thrown at you. I am a pretty private guy, so I can relate to someone wanting to keep personal business personal.

Wishing you the best as you pick yourself up!
