Captain Humble

Whether under his maiden name, Hugh Dillard ... or derivative pseudonyms "High Dullard" or "Huge D---o" ... The Cap has always been one of New Orleans radio's -- in fact, all of New Orleans' -- special treasures. Seeing him still at the helm, whatever the voyage, is a relief and a bunch of prayers answered. More power to ya, Cap'n ... and for many more years to come.
Soxless (and BTW, thanks for handing me that memorable handle).
 
Speaking of handles, how did the name "Captain Humble" come about from Hugh Dillard?
It's one of those "things that make you go hum".
 
"Hugh Dillard" was working with us at WRNO--Bobby Reno, Russ Bonet, Joe "Hosie" Pollett, and briefly, both future legends Marc Driscoll and John Larroquette--at about the time KHJ's Harvey "Humble Harv" Miller was on trial for murdering his wife. Somehow, in the normal run of in-the-halls grab-ass, one of the guys called him "Humble Hugh." From there, it morphed to "The Good Captain, Humble Hugh Dillard," and finally to "Captain Humble."
Of course, like so much of my five years in the crazy Crescent, the mere fact of my ?remembering? it probably renders it absolutely untrue. :p

If Soxless says it....it's the gospel....I never met Cap but when you need a friend to stand up even if he's only 5.5 ...theres none better.....
 
Ok i have been lurking this topic for a week. Cap if you need anything let me know. I will drive to Slidell and do it. I will even wash dishes for free :) I know life can throw you a curveball. The following tuesday after the meeting I got thrown one...So good luck cap and hope to see you soon! You are a friend and I have only met you once.
 
I was giving some sad luv before I found out that this might be a rumor. ..Glad to know hes hanging in there. I'd be glad to work for you if you pay me "under the table!" lol. Im cheap...but not easy. ::)
 
Saturday breakfast has already burned off and I'm feelin' the need for... I dunno... maybe, a good po boy for lunch? Might have to make the BR -> Slidell run and see if I can find one somewhere :)
 
Field trip today showed me what the rest of you already know: Cap's poboys are huge and tasty, and more importantly Mr. Dillard is a gentleman and gracious host. And what a story-teller: I would toss out the name of any random NOLA radio worker/owner/engineer that I have met, and would be entertained with a memory and a great tale, told with wit and a sparkle in the eye.

All this while Cap was carrying on convos with every other patron, and making sure that we all walked out with a smile and a big take-home box. I'm still gnawing on this sandwich tonight.
 
Cap and the po-boys are 'da best! Can't wait until I am able to swing by and do a nice "Humble Huge" piled high sloppy roast beef! See you soon Cap and the best to you and yours for the holidays!
 
He's fine. He's a survivor. He has also earned a break, so those who have been crappy no matter the reason, have no business being crappy with him - especially if you have not paid your dues. Shame shame. If you are there near him, volunteer some time to help him out at his restaurant. He was on the radio in a time when it mattered to people, not just for show while he made money at it, so that he could say that he did something for his community.

What are you talking about? His restaurant never reopened. The man has no running water at his home. He is broke, tired and about to give up. His restaurant equipment was sold or stolen.

Nobody gives up when there is a caring hand to help him along.
 
Hope Capt is going to be ok. Hes a hell of a nice guy and needs his friends right now. Praying for him.
