Captain Noah 35th anniversary special!

V

6ABC is marking the 35th anniversary of Captain Noah and his Magical Ark's start as a daily show by airing a special on his career and the shows memorable moments on October 1st at 7:30pm.

I say 35th anniversary as a daily show is due to the fact that he started as a Saturday morning show(telling mostly bible stories)in August of 1967.

The show was a monster hit on Saturday mornings and it was so popular that 6abc asked him to do this show on a daily basis in the fall of 1970 to shore up weak rating(they were getting beated badly by the Today show and news and capt kangaroo. He agreed to and the show was an even bigger hit whipping all competition.Within a year he had more the double the ratings that the 2 other stations had combined from 7-9am.

The daily version lasted till 1978 when he moved to weekends only, where he stayed till 1995.

The show has been off the air a decade now,but of course 6abc still wants to recognize the talent that brought them success for more than 25 years by honoring him.

He is a legend and is remembered fondly.

Send your pictures to dear old Captain Noah...send today....don't delay

I still remember the moving tribute he did one morning to JFK/RFK/MLKJr; a series of respectfully rendered sketches (a la Gene London) to the tune of "Abraham, Martin & John." This was the early seventies. The ol' Captain was ahead of his time.

I see Captain Noah every day. He looks great and he and Mrs Noah are enjoying retirement. He still has his booming voice and Mrs Noah is as sweet as ever.
I grew up to the Captain. I used to turn on the television and watch the test pattern waiting for his show to start.
He wrote an article for the Philadelphia Inquirer in the Faith section on August 7th. He also had a birthday this month.

I'd watch him on snow day mornings frantically reading the snow numbers, listening for my number.

Our school's radio club toured WFIL in 1975 when it was still in the Channel 6 building. While there we saw the set of "Captain Noah". The cameras were turned off and we were told not to step onto the set. None of us did. We never met Noah, but we did meet Jim O'Brien.

WPVI donated the entire set of captain noah's magical ark to the Please touch museum, so they will have it when the museum opens up it's new home in Fairmount park. I hope they will still have those two puppets he used to talk to along on the reunion show. Hey maybe they'll show a popeye cartoom for old time's sake. What I wouldn't give to be 10 years old again on a saturday morning at 7am. The captain gave me plenty of happy memories way back when. I went on the broadcast pioneers website and learned that Larry Ferrari played the theme. Wow, that's all good stuff.

SOupy Sales was on WPHL a while, and Al alberts showcase was on WPVI on weekends.

Be careful what you wish for. The Popeyes shown on CN&HMA, in the '70s at least, were the relatively cheaply produced shorts circa 1960 produced by Gene Dietch IIRC. In which Bluto was for some reason called Brutus. And with an intro featuring a lame rendition of the theme song. These were the same ones that had aired on Sally Starr's show prior to airing on "Noah".

OTOH the cream of the Popeye crop on Philly TV in the '70s were the decidedly better shorts from the 30's, '40s and '50s that aired on WPHL.

This sounds fun, and the Captain (W. Carter Merbrier) is indeed a legend.

IMHO, the airdate may be a problem. October 1 is a Saturday, and smack in the middle of College Football season. If a game runs over, the Captain gets pre-empted or joined in progress. Ugh...

Also, the Merbriers deserve more than a 22 minute (minus ads) tribute. I'd give it the 7-8PM slot.

Gene London was on WCAU. While Soupy Sales might have been syndicated to Philly for a while, he was a staple on New York television for years.<P ID="signature">______________

I agree with you the Captain deserves more than just 22 minutes. He deserves a full hour 48 minutes or so.

But this is college football season and the show couldnt get an hour due to Action News airing at 7pm during the college season till 7:30pm.

If it was an hour long special it would probably air after the college football regular season the 2nd week of december.

while we are on the subject anyone have old Captain Noah tapes from the 70s and 80s complete with original commercials?
