Captain the Harbour

From www.Radio-Info.com:

"Cool Job Opportunity for Producer in Boston. This is a good one! Clear Channel Boston is looking for a superstar creative services / copywriter / producer / brand steward to executive produce the company’s brand new acquisition 101.7 The Harbor. They are looking to expand their team with another major player who understands how to make a radio brand come to life through creative and engaging imaging. This role would include responsibilities overseeing other stations in the cluster including Matty’s Comedy 1200 and Mia 1430, as well as helping out at Kiss 108 and Jam’n 94-5. Qualifications: Creativity is a must — but so are killer organization skills, incredible attention to detail and excellent follow-through. CC is looking for candidates with a strong knowledge of programming. In fact, past programming experience (APD, programming assistant, sitting in on music meetings, following the PD around until they gave you something to do, etc.) is a major plus! You must be proficient in ProTools, Cool Edit, and NexGen. Rush your resume with materials (sample writing, production and anything else that would sell you) to Clear Channel, Attn: HR, 10 Cabot Road, Suite 302, Medford, MA 02155 or via email at [email protected]. Use I WANT TO BE THE HARBOR MASTER as your email subject."

There's the Harbor, then there's The Coast. New format for CC's 95.3 on NH Seacoast is "95.3
The Coast. We Play Everything." Sound famliar?

They're getting rid of Ken Hudson Campbell already?

There is a difference. "95.3 The Coast" says "We play EVERYthing", but "101.7 The Harbor" says "We play ANYthing".

It's odd that two stations owned by the same company with essentially the same format would use different slogans. Or, is there any difference?

I wonder if they'll share a music log. Wouldn't surprise me.

Just a word choice but a similar idea. I thought most stations like that used Everything, some
used anything.

The old "Mike-FM" 93.7 said "everything", though "The Harbor" 101.7 says "anything".

Yes but a desireable demo and low cost good profit. That's the bottom line in the biz. If you want real variety, creative music etc there's non commercial radio, satellite, Pandora, stuff on web

Plus a few free HD radio subchannels.

101.7 will return to modern rock soon enough.

That would be nice, but Boston already has a bland, mainstream "modern rock" station - WBOS. CC isn't in the business of innovative and risk-taking radio, and that's what FNX strove to be (and frequently, though not always, achieved). Though the FNX P1's don't have a signal aimed their way right now, any new alternative would be forced to compete with WBOS, RadioBDC, WFNX.com, NPR, WAAF, WXRV, college stations, plus SiriusXM, people listening to out of market stations like KEXP and non-radio options

Unless they worked out some sort of deal with the Globe to put RadioBDC on 101.7, I don't see alternative returning to 101.7 the way it returned (briefly) to 101.9 in NYC. If "The Harbor" doesn't work they'll try Spanish, urban, oldies or something else.

Does anyone know how The Harbor is doing in the ratings? They're not showing up in the basic 6+ numbers we all see.

DC101, Radio1045, KYSR... Yes - Modern Rockers. WMMS? Totally out of the relevant rock and roll picture!

Modern Rock has always been, is, and ever will be: Music for young people. 18 to 34 years old. Sure, somebody turns 35 doesn't mean they suddenly quit rocking. People into their thirties and beyond are occupied with earning a living, raising families and otherwise scattered from current music trends. Just a fact of life for all of us. Not too many 35 year olds bouncing a babe on their shoulders for a one hour Rise Against set and then bouncing her in the back of the van for another hour after the show. Nobody's fault. Just a natural progression of life.

Rock and Roll is not fragmented. It is misunderstood. Unlike other musical genres, rock has been continuously popular since it's inception 60 years ago. Rock has continually adapted to (and influenced) societal changes over that time span. Why? Because kids are fluid and flexible with new ideas and the means of expressing them! They also have the social togetherness of schools and other relationship interactions that help each new generation to develop it's own musical identity.

There are three basic levels or "flavors" of rock. CHR for the "tweeners" and high schoolers (How many kids dreamed of becoming a "rock star" like Hanna Montana!). Contemporary or "Modern" rock for the serious 18-34s that purchase the current rock selections and attend the concerts of "todays" rock musicians. Finally Classic Rock/Classic hits for the rest of us who love the music but - for ANY reason - haven't the opportunity to remain current with newer music.

Therefore I consider "Alternative" a misnomer for Modern (today, this year, right now) Rock.

Hope that helps clarify my position.

Great post iyiyi ! If this was Facebook I'd hit the "like" button. I remember Bono's acceptance speech when U2 won a Grammy for best "alternative" band, wondering why they were considered "alternative". They were outselling mainstream acts like Springsteen and Madonna.
