Car Makes & Models with No AM Band.

AM is at the base of EAS because that was the dominant band going back to the times of CONELRAD. That's not the case now.

Today, so little listening is to AM and most AM stations do not even cover their market fully that FM has to be the preferred information source on terrestrial radio. And many AMs have scaled back to low night power and limited coverage that it is useless in many markets.

Just looking at Florida, there is no full market AM day and night station in Ft Myers/Naples, Sarasota/Bradenton, Tallahassee, Pensacola, Oacala/Gainesville and none of the smaller markets.

Not true. There are plenty of LP1 FM stations. Right here in the Nation's Capital, WTOP-FM is the LP1 for D.C., Northern VA, and MD.

That is exactly why Datsun and Toyota took huge shares of the US car market in the 60's: lower labor costs and better car designs vs. planned obsolescence of US cars and very high labor costs and featherbedding. And it has taken US car makers decades to come around to where the quality of some US cars rivals or even, in the case of pickup trucks, exceeds that of the best imports.

An anecdote about that functionality. My wife and I are touring in the middle of Montana several years ago. Storm clouds are brewing, and we've got about 150 miles before our destination. I pull off the Interstate and pause at an underpass to wait out the storm movement.

I turn on the weather radio and listen. Here's this big huge list of counties and thunderstorm warnings, etc. I had no idea what county I was in. The information was virtually worthless. My paper map did not show county-level definitions, nor did my GPS. I could see the storm was crossing the Interstate; all I needed to do was wait out the passing of the storm across my path before resuming travel.

Moral of the story....Weather Radio reception capability, nice, but a cell phone is better.

I was driving to the mountains and I turned on WMNC which has a satellite classic country format. There were dark clouds off in the distance. As I got closer to them there was an EAS announcement. There was a severe thunderstorm warning for the area I happened to be in. We were warned of large hail and high winds. Small hail started hitting the car soon after that and I got off the road and under a shelter at a truck stop. No high wind, but the rain sure was heavy for next 30 minutes or so.

I keep hearing more and more PSAs on conservative talk stations about petitioning the government to require manufacturers to keep AM radio in their cars. Does anyone get the hypocrisy. How about letting the free market decide? Petition the manufacturers, not the government.

This is because the National Association of Broadcasters has been pushing these spots to AM operators.

AM Radio Toolkit - has all the spots for you to pursue if you like

What's hypocritical? The fact is that electronics manufacturers aren't based in the US anymore. Most radios are made in China.

The auto manufacturers aren't dropping AM because of the marketplace. So making it a marketplace issue avoids the reason.

Again, where's the hypocrisy? What's wrong with petitioning congress with grievances? It's in the constitution.
 
2023 Honda Hybrid CR-V has AM, but buried on page 3 of the main UI screen... for info only.

Is it just the close-up view or is that a very busy combination of textures and button styles that looks downright ugly?
