"Car Talk" Parks It After 25 Years

vchimpanzee said:
No, I'm not expecting anything except to be entertained, maybe learn a few things about cars, and maybe learn how to solve a puzzler. They're achieving that. In fact, I'm listening to the entire show now, something I used to not do.
You're expecting things to be like you want them, like they once were, like you expect them to be.
When they're not like that, we get the stream of consciousness every-minute-detail of how you recorded your favorite shows, the weather conditions, your concern for people who for some reason expect to be on air when the is taped, etc. etc. etc.
If you're being entertained, and that is all you want to do, just enjoy it. Don't worry, be happy. Don't give us the stream of consciousness every-minute-detail of your thought process. Just enjoy it.

Stream of consciousness example which has nothing to do with anything except for how it may or may not affect vchimpanzee:
And now my church is talking about moving their service from 11:00 to 10:00. I hope not. On some Saturdays I can't get home in time for the start, and it would really make unloading groceries a challenge. Even more of a challenge when there's no new puzzler.
None of us have any control over your church service times, but hopefully you are going there for a higher purpose than just to be entertained.

I was referring to "Exploring Music with Bill McLaughlin," his WFMT Fine Arts Network strip that serves to demystify classical music for the neophyte much like Karl Haas did with "Adventures in Good Music." I'd completely forgotten abput "Saint Paul Sunday."

I'm not, but I can't just not go if I missed any of "Car Talk" the previous day.

IT ONLY WORKS WHEN THE ANSWER IS 2

That's no fun. I come here to rant. It's the highlight of my week. Or sometimes twice a week.

At long last, the brothers admitted they had put their show together from old material. For Mother's Day, they had clips of when their mother was on the show (I have heard her, and the clips were usually old). This included a time when she called in and they chastised Doug for not screening the calls. And they said they had to find a way to make sure she didn't get through again.

Doug's mother also called and they finally admitted he is never there when they are.

And even though it gives Orb an incentive to run faster, this is NPR (that was obviously new).

I heard the Saturday morning broadcast and I swear that last line was about Rust Man 3. Then, the Sunday broadcast was different even though the content of the show was the same. I was listening on WBUR.

It sounded like the show was the same to me. I went to church with my aunt and uncle and shouldn't know this, though I go in the nursery until the kids come in the educational building and start making too much noise. At that point it's not crowded in the sanctuary and there won't be any risk of contemporary music. So they don't know the difference.

This past Saturday, two attempts to sound current. The IRS gave extra scrutiny "even though ... this is NPR".

And on "Stump the Chumps", Preakness jockeys were mentioned.

One blooper: they mentioned last week's puzzler but there wasn't one. They did the one from two weeks ago.

If these guys can get into MIT anyone can. Brittany on "Glee" got such a high SAT score she was recruited. She was told this in the principal's office as another, perfectly intelligent, student was told his score was essentially what you get for merely being able to write your name. All this time I thought their SAT scores somehow got switched. And Brittany proved she was a moron when she visited MIT, only her doodling on paper revealed her to be a savant like "Rain Man".

One Saturday, the guys mentioned some gift for someone's father which might, if ordered, arrive by Father's Day. If not this year, then next year.

And a caller mentioned having trouble going outside due to cicadas.

As for an admission of how old the content is, a caller mentioned asking "that Martha woman" but she's been getting bad press lately.

And there was a case of a man being told when this airs, you'll probably get lots of advice, which we'll pass on to you. How long did he have to wait for it to air?

And Tom just got his MG.

Chimp: I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here. They made no secret they were retiring. Everybody knows they are running repeats. They probably are selecting material that will still sound topical. Are you saying they are trying to put something over on the listening audience? That they should not be doing re-runs?

If PBS can keep running Lawrence Welk, NPR can keep running Car Talk.

In any case, what's the point of these weekly updates?
???

Documentation.

If they're doing it this way, they are trying to put one over on the audience.

But if you were waiting for help and your call was never broadcast, would you want to wait ten years?

Documentation of what? The beginning of this topic is the announcement the show was going out of production.

They never promised that every question would be broadcast. The show was aired at different times in different markets. Calls were never lived. People sent in questions and they picked some to call and record for the show. It's a talk show. It's done for the audience, not for the callers.

In any case, you made your point. You think it's deceptive to air old shows. We get it. Weekly updates is beating a dead horse. Call your local station and tell them to stop running the show.

And that means we can't talk about what they do?

It sounded to me like he was being promised something.

You have talked about it. I don't see the need for you to keep talking about it - week after week, repeating the same basic complaint.
Car Talk is in repeats. Francisco Franco remains dead.

If I hear something that sounds interesting, I'll comment.

These have nothing to do with the guys retiring, and they're not necessarily exact quotes. They're just funny and would be appreciated by most of those interested in this topic.

Ray: Do you remember anything about last week's puzzler?
Tom: My mind is a complete blank.
Ray: I know that, but do you remember anything about last week's puzzler?

If it turns out we're right, you'll think we're geniuses, but if we're not, you'll agree with most of our listeners.

There is a warning on the container "Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Keep out of reach of pets, children and Tom Magliozzi."

On one show, one of the guys says, "If we weren't here, Scott Simon would have to do another hour." Precisely what one station I can pick up is doing.

"Even though ... this is NPR" included cicadas, Tim Tebow, and The Blackhawks throwing their Stanley Cup at the radio.

They said they mentioned Mother's Day observed several weeks ago and talked about their father for Father's Day but only briefly.

Keller is a name a caller had several weeks earlier (but I don't remember it), a caller named Keller said. She changed her name because she didn't like Kelly.

The Puzzler is going on vacation, just like always. I always hate when that happens but they do so much good stuff instead of The Puzzler when it is away.

Ray offered to send Tom last week's Puzzler by ESP. This required clearing his mind. Tom said, "Huh?" Ray said obviously his mind is pre-cleared.

After they announced the Puzzler was on vacation--they didn't know how long the vacation was--they only had one caller. They wasted considerable time explaining why their friend Vincent O. was nicknamed Jimmy, not Vinny. I don't even remember what about this was car-related. The woman--who had the same name as the guys' mother, but spelled differently, and that's what launched the Jimmy vs. Vinny discussion--was living in sin and her parents hoped they would get married. The guys wanted to talk to her man and they hoped it would happen next week. I mention this since maybe the full-length conversation was too long for the show back when it happened, but now it's perfect.

During one call, a reference was made to wildly fluctuating temperatures. I guess it happened. Mostly spring was called off by the sequester.

I think WFDD has dropped the show.

Why the weeklyish recitation, vchimp?
I for one feel like we're all watching you listening to yourself explaining why their friend Vincent goes by Jimmy (hint: wasting considerable time).
It's like you're on some kind of quest to solve some unspecified global problem, that nobody else sees as a problem.
