Cardinals Radio Coverage

Since KTRS became the flagship station of the Cardinals Radio Network, how far is the listenership for their games? For so many years with KMOX airing the games and serving as the flagship station, the Cardinals broadcasts could be heard for hundreds and hundreds of miles. I've heard well-known people who were also baseball fans remember how they listened to the games either via KMOX or one of the stations on their massive network. I wonder how it is now?

Are they on the internet - or not?

To my knowledge, the Cardinals, like all Major League Baseball teams, are only available on the internet if you pay a fee to get the games on either radio or TV.

In my original question, I was wondering how coverage of the broadcasts is around not only the St. Louis area, but in those areas who used to hear them on KMOX and/or the stations on their network. Interestingly, there was a time not many years ago when the Cardinals would not provide a list of the stations on their radio network. Since it involved the public airways, I have always questioned the valitity of that refusal.

KTRS does have a null in their nighttime signal pattern that makes it hard to receive for listeners in Illinois especially starting about 5 miles east of Downtown St. Louis. There is an FM station about 60 miles northeast in Litchfield, WSMI that carries the games that puts a moderate signal into Metro-East. KTRS covers the Missouri side of the metro well day and night. During the day, KTRS with it's 550 dial position has great coverage, especially in Illinois. I have received them on a car radio with a fringe signal as far north as Joliet, Il, with WIND walking on them.

One could argue that at one time the cards were "Americas Team' in that they were the 2nd team furthest west (other than KC) and with the much stronger radio signal. My uncle was a true cards fan and listened on 1120 tather than watching the yanks and mets on TV, At one time KMOX was a reasonable catch for 1000 mi in all directions and possibly more with a real good radio. But still a coverage area of 600 mi at night is something the Cards lost by not airing the games on 1120. Too bad; the cards are such as class operation. They will get it together and return to 1120 soon.

I've also heard that in the 1950's or so, there was an AM station in Arkansas on the Cardninals Radio Network that could be heard for a great distance. It may have been in Little Rock.

Before the Athletics moved to Kansas City, the Cardinals were not only the farthest west major league team, but also the farthest south. When you add that along with the great teams they had in the 30's & 40's, there was quite an attraction for radio coverage.

Looks like the Cardinals might be at least contemplating returning to KMOX:

With the Cardinals disappointed by the dividend realized following their flight from former radio rightsholder KMOX, speculation mounts that the club will opt out of its relationship with current rightsholder KTRS after this season.

From my experience around the Joliet area, the KTRS signal is beyond weak, even at night. Sometimes on a cloudy day, I might barely pick it up on the car radio during the day, but I pretty much figure that i I want KTRS, I need to use my iPhone.

KMOX actually stole the Redbirds away many decades ago, from KWK, that was a local signal, only... (1380kHZ)...

WRMJ-FM (Aledo, IL) carries the cardinals. Last I knew KOKX-FM (Keokuk-Burlington, IA-Quincy, IL) did too.

WMBD 1470 in Peoria carries The games. They have a very strong skywave for
a five kW station.

WTAX 1240 in Springfield, Il. carries them also. I believe that WJBC in Bloomington, Il.
also carries the games.

KTRS is so far down the dial, that they have a great daytime signal, I can pick them up
on the south side of Chicago most days, despite WIND 560.

At night is a totally different story, KMOX is definitely the better station. It comes in great
in Chicago, almost every night.

I figured teams were intentionally putting these broadcasts on weaker AM or FM signals so they could cover their own market, but capitolize on the MLB.TV package. What point is there to subscribing to it if you can get most games on a 50k blowtorch?
