Cari Champion booted from WGCL

No big loss as far as I'm concerned, but CBS46 weekend anchor Cari Champion has been fired from WGCL after dropping the MOTHER of all eff bombs live on-air. Rumor has it that she wasn't the funnest person to work with...

If anyone finds video of that one, please share!

If a WGCL news anchor drops an "F" bomb, will their news see any ratings?

I doubt if the anchors had sex on the air it would do much for the ratings (just get them a big FCC fine). The only way they get ratings is if Fred Powers gets electrocuted (WGCL was the #1 newscast in Atlanta the last time that occured).

It would be smart for Mike Moore to not say anything since it might be taken out of context for either side, and that the issue is still under investigation. I find it odd that the floor director's headset wasn't working during the incident, and I highly doubt she said "muthasucka" instead of the alleged "unholy word". What was she doing, auditioning for Parliament Funkadelic?

I use to be a floor director for a newscast in another state (thank god I got out of it,) but, what about the anchor's IFB? Did she have it in? Did she hear the director say "Cue" in her IFB?

I know that all directors that I've worked for, tell the anchor in their IFB "cue" or "your up!"

Always blame the production people when you make a mistake...yeap, that's an anchor for you!

I was a former floor director for CBS46, and I can assure you that the director does not say "Cue" in the anchor's ear. The director does give minute cues to everyone on headsets(everyone can hear Master Control most of the time giving same cues). It depends on the FD, if they did give any time cues while in the break. They almost had to of give at least one time cue. What anchors and reporters need to relize that they are wearing live mics... at anytime, those mics can go live, over the air. Cari should of used different wording while on set during the breaks.

But it seems to be an industry standard to blame the floor director when something goes bad. But for the floor director, he has the camera op to back him up.

Richard Prince's Journal-ism article quotes Cari Champion as saying, "Several years ago an Atlanta anchorman at another station actually said MF on the air and was merely suspended, not fired."

Who was the other anchor?

I believe that was Tom Regan over at Channel 2, but the incident didn't happen while he was at the anchor desk. I think he was reporting in the field when he was harassed by some teenagers and he dropped the bomb. He was suspended for 2 weeks.

It was Tom Regan. He was doing a live stand-up to intro a package. Some kids drove by blowing their horn. A couple of seconds after they cut to the package, assuming his mic had been killed, Tom dropped the "f---ing a--hole" bomb.

My first radio job was in LaGrange in 1987. The station manager who hired me pointed to the studio mic and said "Always assume it's on". That's served me well in radio and television these twenty years. How hard is that to learn?

I also remember watching Morse Diggs' life flash before his eyes when a man walking behind him during a live shot dropped about three or four F-bombs in a row while shouting to someone across the street.

Obviously not Diggs' fault, but you could see the "I can't believe that just happened on live TV" look in his eyes.

That's the beauty, and the scar, of live television: ANYTHING can (and will) happen! Yeah, I've lived by that credo "the mic's always on" as well. And now, with YouTube, assume there's ALWAYS a camera somewhere. Anyone that works in this industry should live by that credo as well, and know that, when you're in the studio, ALWAYS use the preschool lingo!

Another recent example is when Arthur Chien, then a reporter for WCBS-TV, was doing a live shot at a subway station, whe a heckler affiliated with a radio show was muttering in the background. Not a mere second after he completed his piece pre-production, he turned around and gave the heckler the business. His response, also, was that he thought his mic was off.

Newsblues.com is reporting today that Cari Campion has been rehired.

Per their homepage note - "Atlanta station rehires "mothasucka" weekend anchor"

Word is that WGCL has hired a veteran Atlanta anchor (ostensibly as a replacement for Cynne' Simpson). Anyone know who it is? Wanna speculate?

Tana Brackin?
Cynthia Good?
Shaunya Chavis?
Angela Robinson?
Tiffany Cochran?

Who could it possibly be???

Didn't mean to go off-topic there...so about that Cari gal...

I just realized that Newsblues.com is FREE this week, so I went digging in the archives and found the article they posted about Ms. Champion when she was initially fired. It looks like she came to Atlanta with a bit of baggage:

Interesting info. Certainly gives (additional) reason for skepticism in evaluating her situation with regards to the "mothasucka" incident.
