Caribbean station WAVS 1170

I see that WAVS will soon be in its 20th year as a Caribbean station.

I remember that WAVS started out as an easy listening station on 1190.

When did it change?

Does anyone remember more?

WAVS flipped to brokered Caribbean sometime around 87 or 88....They actually did Spanish, targeted to the Broward area prior to that, and R&B before...I don't think it's quite 20 years yet for the Caribbean format...Perhaps the 20 years is for the frequency change to 1170, which I believe ushered in the switch from Religious to R&B. I actually had a Broadcasting Yearbook from 1975 that showed that at one point, Lowell "Bud" Paxson owned this station, during the 1190 days, along with WYND 1280 in Sarasota, and the 1470 AM/106.3 FM (now 97.1) combo in Tampa Bay.

The Spanish format was maybe a bit ahead of its' time, as the Spanish migration to Broward had, well, not quite made it yet in full at that point....I think the switch to brokered Caribbean was brought about by the return of Ray Hooper as GM.
