Carl Beane Tragedy

I believe he was on 'BZ four weeks ago overnight as part of the Bb preview show. I think he's done a lot of freelance stuff for BZ.
He sounded like he knew Steve (who's off) pretty well: we'll probably hear more with Bradley J who will be filling in.

Yes I think he was 'BQ myself...
meanwhile the article does mention being at WARE

>>News of Mr. Beane's death saddened people who knew him in the small Central Massachusetts communities where people remember him from his early days as a sportscaster at WARE 1250 AM.
Earlier today Mr. Beane filled in at the station in Palmer, doing the morning show from 6 to 9 a.m.
WARE owner and general manager Bruce Marshall said he is devastated by the loss.

“He loved doing local sports,” Mr. Marshall said, adding that Mr. Beane never forgot his roots in local radio. “He loved doing play-by-play for high school football.”

He had been at WARE, had done some V/O work back in the day at WESO/WQVR Southbridge, and did mornings in Willimantic on then WXLS 98.3 FM in the 70's. He also worked at Metro in the 90's doing sports and at WBZ Radio sometime in the 90's.

A hell of a nice guy. I don't really know what to say, it's just shocking and sad. Holland Rd. is only a few miles from where he lived, he's driven that road a million times.

There is word that he may have fallen asleep while driving. Apparently, after doing the morning show at WARE this morning, he told people there he was heading home to take a nap. His SUV crossed the double yellow line and hit a wall and a tree. The crash itself was reported by some golfers at a nearby golf course. :'(

Don Orsillo just mentioned during the game that Carl suffered a heart attack while driving home.

I believe Monkee Davy Jones also suffered a heart attack while he was driving...

Meanwhile, I wonder how Beane's passing was reflected at Fenway (was Wednesday night's game in Boston?)...

No, they were in Kansas City. They are home tonight, playing Cleveland, game time 7:10. There is supposed to be some sort of pre-game tribute to him.

I know this may be too soon but does anyone know who is going to be announcing tonight??

Doubt they have announced that. If I had to make a wild guess, I'd say Ed Brickley, who was Carl's immediate predecessor in that role. But, as I said, that's a wild guess. I would imagine that they, and any team for that matter, would have to have a back up plan in place.

They need to have some announcer there tonight. It would be a tribute to have someone there. Maybe I can be the announcer tonight... :-\

From NECN Twitter:

“@NECN: PA mic will be silent throughout tonight's #RedSox game in memory of Fenway Park announcer Carl Beane. #FenwayPark #CarlBeane”

I think it's a fitting tribute to a great guy who loved going to the ballpark.

I don't remember the situation which led to the female announcer getting the job but it may have been a contest (seriously) win and the choice was awful (a clear voice who tried).
I think she was there for at least two seasons? I don't remember who immediately followed Sherm?

From what I've heard over the years, the job doesn't pay much. If they could find a radio guy with good pipes and an appreciation for the gig --like Beane had-- they can at least attempt a smooth transition (unlike years ago). But it needs to be the right guy and not a stupid hire.

One of the ESPN articles today stated that Carl's starting pay in 2003 was $50/game, even if it went into extra innings.
