Carl Marcocci R.I.P.

In 1965 he hired a skinny high school senior at WYRE in Maryland. In those days, he was Jack Armstrong. In 1970, he and partners had a monster FM in Erie, Pa. He hired a 23 year old to make it happen. In 1976 he brought a 29 year old to Florida. In 1986 he hooked a 39 year old up with the owners of WLVU in Port Richey. Carl Marcocci loved the business. Carl taught me radio. I am numb from the news and my heart heavy with sadness for Betty. As you can see, he touched my life and surely many, many others. Carl was one in a million and one of the last of a breed of independent broadcasters.

Yes, I used to work at one of his stations (CITRUS 95.3) in citrus county....way back from 1998-2001. He hired me at the tender age of 18 and I learned ALOT from him and my opportunities there. Always good to his employees. I heard of his sons death (dave marcocci) last year (he was my PD at the time I was there)....unfortunate events in that family.

I feel for them. Prayers to the family. This is very sad news.

Frank: Was Carl partners with Bob Burstein and Jack Laubach?

Yes he was. They, at the time, also owned WESA in Charleroi, which was Carl's hometown. Carl ran ESA and had his office there and would come to Erie every so often.

I too, along with JP, worked for the Marcocci family at Citrus back in the day. I'm saddened to learn of the death of Carl, and his son David who died a year ago. Carl was a good man and he will be remembered.

My daughter Lynn was born in Atlantic City (NJ) at the time that Jack Armstrong was doing news at WMID in 1964. I was a jock there and going into his newscast. Jack said I should listen closely to the end of it and I did. Jack, on his own announced the birth of my daughter at the end of the newscast and gave me a tape of it as a personal keepsake. I never forgot that and eventually gave the tape to my daughter. Jack always had the business savvy and most of us figured he would be a star on the other side of the mic, which of course he was, as a station owner in the Tampa Bay area. Jack was also known by his real name Carl Marcocci. I was shocked when someone mentioned his death. May you rest in peace Carl. This is one person that will never forget you. Mel Phillips.
