I heard that Carl Smith from the OAB passed away today.

He was a very nice man and did a great job while at the OAB.

Carl hired talented people, then got out of the way to let them practice their craft. As a result, KRAV was thee place to work in Tulsa during the late 70s and 80s.

I never worked for Carl, but knew him well from his OAB days where we worked together on many industry projects. I got an email from him less than a month ago. His mind was still very, very sharp but the ALS had robbed him of most other functions.

Barbara and Dan are in my thoughts.

Durk, you couldn't have put it better. Talk about a legendary, visionary pioneer of FM radio in Tulsa...
When all of us gathered here in '81 to put K95 on, we knew that KRAV was the best station in town at the time...and happy it wasn't they we were going to have to battle! Rivers, Hopkins, Cassidy, etc...plus some very solid news people. All love to Carl's family and colleagues in radio and at the OAB.

I couldn't agree with Coop more regarding Carl's formidable vision and leadership at FM 96 KRAV. I was very proud to have worked for FM-96 with the original crew. Kip Guth hired me along with Johnny Rivers, Jeff Elliot, Steve Cassidy, Kenny King, Dan Sherman and Dave Duquisne (pronounced Ducaine). Carl was a good dude. I am so glad I was there for his 70th birthday party and re-union back in 2000. What a gala affair. Pat Clawson, our news director for the inauguaral crew came all the way in from Washington D.C. as did many other from points beyond. He shall be sorely missed but never forgotten. My prayers are with his family. I know he's in a good place.

I suspect that would of been the same Kenny. Last I hearn, he was driving helicopters for a living, but that was some eyars back. Haven't seen him in a while, and he diodn't make the reunion some years ago.

Carl was a fine man to work for, and the consummate manager. I naievely created a monster f-up at one point, and went on vacation. Got back, and when I stopped in his office, he outlined the problem and looked up. All's I could say was "Yeh, I did it. I won't do it again." Alls he said was "OK, don't. You have to go make peace with Phil (Hall)". He never mentioned it again. And I never did it again, either. You do whatever is asked of you for a guy like that. When I left (some while later) I went in and told him I was headed out and the situation, his resoponse was "Do you want to hear a counter offer?" I told him honestly No, you'd just be paying ransom and he ssaid he figured, would I please stay long enough to get a new person started in the position? I was happy to.

Had I known of his passing earlier, I would have made the services. He was a fine gemtleman of the old school, and the world is a darker place for his passing.

Forgot in my earlier post...PSA time...ALS may well be the most wicked way a person can be taken out that exists. I get nauseous thinking about what an ALS patient must endure until the inevitable final loss occurs. Sixteen years with that Telethon taught me a lot about what all forms of MD inflict. One of the few things I actually get angry about...that rotten, ba**ard killer! Labor Day was only a couple weeks ago...Jerry is still taking checks for MDA.

Bob, was this the same Kenny King that attended TU in the 1970s?

Stan-
Yep, the one and only! Kenny and I have lunch together with Norm Laramee quite often. We always leave just ahead of the police. ;D
