Carley from WAZY

Does anybody know what became of Carley O'Kelly who used to host the mid-days on WAZY? I know she left back in mid Novemeber?

i hear shes working for suburban chicago radio station

Carley is MIA from what I know. I was a personal friend of hers and when she moved she deleted her My Space page and everything. Doesn't return any calls from any of her "friends" here in Lafayette. If I hear anything else I'll let you know.

Hmm...that's very odd. Tell me, was she let go from WAZY or did she take another job?

Hopefully, she just decided to cut ties, wipe the slate clean, and move on. Granted, that's a pretty crappy thing to do, especially if you were friends with her, but for the sake of her well-being, I hope that's the case.

I hope everything turns out fine, and yes, let us know if you have any info.

Sounds like she did that to a lot of us. Too bad too. She was a really great person. it was sad to see her disappear like that...
Definitely let me know if you hear anything. I know she moved back home, but that's about it.

Carley left on her own free will. She was actually just an intern as she was a student at Purdue.

Continuing saga of the "AMP dilemma" of why they fail:
They had an intern from Purdue as a high-profile midday talent. It sounded like it, too. Yikes.

I hope she lands on her feet, but it was insane hearing her do her "training" on a 50,000 watt station.
Who makes such a decision? "Well, she's pretty bad, but at least it's free!"

???

AMP is too cheap to hire talented people. So the PD had no choice... he had to go to Purdue to get a so-so person to track the show. I love Carley, I really do, but you're right. She has some work to do and lot's to learn still.

That's going to be the death of WAZY probably in the next book or two. Major MAJOR format change and investing in talent is one of only a couple options for that frequency now.

WAZY doesn't have any listeners over the age of 30 and WGLM has already covered ground the last couple of books in the all-important Female 25-54 demo.
Factor in WXXB doing so well in the younger demos, and WAZY finds itself (again) in a predicament.
Too young for the older folks, too old for the younger folks.

Major format changes????? That is the problem with AMP, they never stay with the same thing. Honestly if they hadnt been such idiots at Amp headquarters, wherever that is....they would have been on top. I hear they cant keep their hands off of anything. Makes me think they want to lose money. I always heard that it takes money to make money but they just kept fireing people and cutting wages of their management. Remember the book isnt out yet and WAZY sounded better than ever. I actually did listen to Carley once in awhile and while she was not great she was at least live and lets face it, everyone has to start somewhere. Intern, free or not, she was a warm body and a pretty good find for free. Wonder what scared her away?

MAJOR format change. Not just go from lukewarm to hot AC, or CHR to Rhythmic CHR or whatever. They need to start from scratch with extreme prejudice. Make the Wolf an alternative and put the country head-to-head against K-105 with lots of localized talent and features. Some hardcore change-ups like that.
Like you said, spend money to make money. Not just trim around the edges with your current format and change jocks every month.

They haven't stuck with whatever they are trying to do now to register much with the new batch of diaries. They would have to keep things the same through the next book to gauge any difference for that.

Gosh, now a jock's first "big break" is to work for WAZY middays fulltime? What happened to working parttime on the weekends putting in ungodly hours until you get the call?
You either toll away for months or you get the gig handed to you, I guess. No middle ground...
I sure wouldn't want somebody's "babystep" mistakes to be heard that far and wide until they get trained.

Who's in charge over there? The answer: Noooooooooooobody.

There was talk about flipping WAZY to Z-Country when Dan first got to 18th Street, but those talks seemed to die down. Then the talk was about switching to Hot AC, but with no management in place, who knows about that. Dan also had a fancy to switch The Wolf to X-95.3 and making it Active Rock with Mancow, Opie and Anthony, and a few more jocks for the male listener, but again who knows where that idea has fallen to.

With no jocks, besides Scotty now, I see Art going to a Jack format. Why hire new jocks if they are just going to leave? The Wolf is currently on auto-pilot, so it seems natural to make WAZY that way too.

Word has it Steve Clark is on the way out too. The rats have all jumped from that sinking ship. The future of those stations are in the hands of the Almighty now. No, not Art, he is the alternative of the Almighty!

Oh, and Carly was not live in the least. Even DawnDavis said that she was tracking the show. So in no way was she a warm body, maybe just a warm voice.

it would be awesome was wolf to go alternative. what dan did with wazy is the best that stick has done in years. i think the midday girl was live on the station

I can tell you 100% that Carley NEVER did a live show. Every show was tracked. She was sitting in classes at Purdue during her shift.

The talk about flipping 96.5 to country has been discussed on here a couple times and has went through my mind on occasion as well.

This is what I would do with AMP and why...

96.5 = country

If AMP is really wanting to give K 105 a run for their money......Art would put country on the one station in Lafayette that has a better overall signal than WKOA. Although, a decent amount of money would have to be dished out in order for the scheme to work. Theyd have to also grab a big name from K 105 to "anchor" the station so-to-speak. Country listeners are extremely loyal to their country station and they need an excuse to jump ship. If......for example, Bob Vizza........moves from K 105 to the new station, it would give some of the existing K 105 listeners an excuse to check out the competing station.

Also move Purdue football and basketball back to the station, buy some top-notch imaging package and give the station as much of a local feel as possible. K 105s community radio feel with a large market sound is what has kept it alive for over 30 years. If you dont.....make sure you to at least put on top syndicated talent like Lia and Blair Gardner on the station for nights and overnights. Perhaps even move Bob and Tom over to the station. Their midwest humor and country parody songs would be enough to appeal to the average country listener. Theyre going at it all wrong with having programming off of Country Today from WRN on the Wolf. You cant knock down the top station in Lafayette by being on the bird 24/7.

95.3 = CHR

95.3 is probably the second best signal in the AMP cluster. They could do CHR the same way B102.9 did it when they first came on the air.....playing all the hits with little to no talk. One DJ would suffice on the station...namely in nights. Drop Romeo's Playhouse or move it back to nights. When does the average CHR listener....the real CHR listener....listen to the station for extended periods? Nights! Cover that shift for sure and make others secondary. Although, a top 40 jukebox would probably be enough as long as an occasional contest, mix show, or countdown show was thrown into the mix. Basically keep this station the way 96.5 is currently...only with someone local in the DJ seat at night or how about this....get the other talent under the AMP umbrella to voicetrack the station.

95.7 = active rock

A station similar to 93.5 The Rock in Champaign....between active rock and alternative...would probably be the best fit in Lafayette. Keep it edgy enough to get advertisers but alternative enough to bring in the listeners looking for something a little different on the radio. What I am proposing here is a 1999 Rocket thats got the KHY edge. Put Opie and Anthony on in the mornings....they are the hottest morning radio show right now and picking up lots of affiliates across the country. A year or two ago...I would have recommended Mancow but he is adding primarily conservative talk stations around the country now. Its only a matter of time before he drops the sultry talk in favor of pro Bush rah-rah-rah. Like 95.3 as a CHR....the station could be primarily a juke box with maybe one live shift. Keep Steve Clark around as PD, though. That guy does a phenominal job with modern and classic rock formats. He could make this station sound great. 95.7 would be the best place for this format...covering most of the college and blue collar areas of town with a significant male 18-34 concentration.

1410 = ???? So many possiblities for this station.

Option 1...They could take it all talk with 100% syndicated programming with Rush, Hannity, Beck, and all of the other talk all-stars. Hey! That has a nice ring to it......All Star Talk 1410. Maybe even throw in a liberal talker or two on the station like Stephanie Miller or Big Ed to grab some WBAA-AM listeners.

Option 2...Fox Sports Radio. With the Olympic sports agreement between Purdue and AMP......they could put Fox Sports Radio on the station and time shift the coaches shows, etc. for airtimes on the station. Plus, move the Colts to the AM, bring back the Pacers, and maybe "the best of Indiana college sports" with Notre Dame football and IU basketball. Just an idea, but it would be a better fit to sell with 95.7 and 96.5 if the above ideas were implemented.

Option 3.....Spanish. Many people have talked about regional Mexican music on the station. They could hire a bilingual sales person or two with good voices so they can voice any local spots that come the stations way and get programming off the bird 24/7. Since the signal stinks during the day outside of Tippecanoe County and stinks at night not too far out of West Lafayette.....this may be the best bet for the signal.

What formats would not work....

Hot AC----Its too early to tell whether WGLM needs a competitor. Maybe another book or two would be a good indicator whether or not a second hot AC is needed in Lafayette. You could lose your tail with such an investment right now. Maybe not so much the case in another year or two. AC would be the best bet but it must be done right.

Oldies----Not even WASK-FM is really doing oldies anymore except for at night because of their satellite service. If an AMP station wanted to compete against WASK-FM....maybe they should try classic hits.

Alternative---A full-blown alternative rock station would be a hit on campus but not so much the case elsewhere. A more mainstream format like active rock would be the best bet. You can still sneak in some alternative songs here and there but keep it primarily mainstream and contemporary....90s and today....with a few 80s flashbacks from GNR, Ozzy, Metallica, Def Leppard and the like.

Then again this is what this armchair PD would do to fix the mess that is AMP. If they take these ideas and they flop...I will gladly drop radio as a hobby and parttime job and move on to something else. I have a few model cars sitting in my apartment that need tending to anyway. :)
