Carlos Diaz MIA At Wake Up Arizona

ftvlive is reporting that Carlos Diaz is missing and hasn't been seen for several weeks on CBS5 Wake Up Arizona. The ads for Wake Up Arizona just have Yetta, Heidi, and Ian and are now saying, "The News Is Back In The Morning!" (similar to the ads for CBS This Morning), emphasizing less chit chat and not wasting the viewer's time. It sounds like Carlos did not fit into the new strategy.

I guess the "GMAZ lite" format was not working in the ratings. This week, primary evening anchor Sean McLaughlin is joining Yetta in the mornings. Sean is working the 10pm show along with Wake Up Arizona (the night owl shift).

Who will be joining Yetta in the mornings? Any current KPHO/KTVK staffers in the running? As we've discussed before, maybe they should just simulcast GMAZ on CBS5.

His bio is still on the CBS5 website, so maybe he's been assigned other duties.

And apparently, one of those duties is anchoring the noon news. He's on as I write this.

Aha! ftvlive said he had 90 days left on his contract. Perhaps he will spend his last 90 days anchoring at noon? If you're going to pay him, you might as well get some work out of him. I did notice that Yetta is anchoring the news breaks during CBS This Morning (which was usually Carlos' job).

They could actually put Preston Phillips on the weekday morning news (he seems like a hard news journalist). He subbed last week and did a decent job. And put Carlos on the weekend evening news, if they want to keep Carlos around.

I watched Carlos on the noon news and liked his delivery. It wasn't the former ABC "happy news" yuk-it-up style but it was more refreshing than the deadpan delivery that passes for the national accent these days. And you had to pay attention or you would miss one of his hidden zingers such as "blah, blah is my favorite show" (it changed every day - an inside joke no doubt). He's Ian. I'm Carlo.....er, Tuna.

Preston worked at KGTV (ABC 10 San Diego) and was a very good journalist (did the stories without much of the Scripps news hype like you see on ABC 15, the sister (Scripps) station to KGTV.)

Good for Carlos, his wife and newborn. Wasn't he commuting from Las Vegas to Phoenix?

The "chemistry" probably just wasn't right. He occasionally made some pretty
surprising comments about his AM colleagues.

How many colleagues has Yetta worked with? It seems like they come and go, yet she remains. Has the station thought about replacing her? So now the station only has 3 "anchors for all newscasts"??

Yetta has had only TWO co-anchors: Adam Longo and Carlos Diaz. Adam left not too long after Wake Up started to take the main anchor spot at a Washington D.C. station (who would pass up such an opportunity?). Carlos clearly didn't have a long term contract for this job (was it even a year?). That said, I think they went too light and fluffy with the concept. The more serious approach that they are taking now is more in line with CBS News. If that doesn't work, then Yetta will probably be gone too.

As for the web site bios, I think they are missing weekend anchor Preston Phillips and Sunday Night anchor Lindsey Reiser. If you look at KTVK, they are missing a couple of anchors as well (Jared Dillingham and Lina De Florias).

In the back of my mind, I was thinking the same thing! We've seen Yetta at Fox10, KTAR radio, 3TV, ABC15 and now CBS5. I don't know any of the backstage stories but after a while one has to think...
It's better to have this discussion as its own thread.

I never liked how 3TV and now CBS5 list their anchors. It took a long time to have Tess Rafols as an anchor. Lina de Florias is shown as a reporter, yet she's been anchoring GMAZ weekend and used to anchor Saturday & Sunday nights. And Jared Dillingham is listed as a reporter?!?

Yetta has definitely bounced around. I honestly don't remember the exact details of the Fox10 story (wasn't she fired right after her first child was born or something???).

The 3TV and ABC15 story has to do with a single management person who didn't like Yetta. The person came to 3TV and got rid of Yetta and then went to ABC15 to fire Yetta once again. I don't remember the name of the person, but someone explained in one of these tv forums.

I may be the only one in the Phoenix tv market who actually likes her. :)

Cameron Beck?

That's horrible. Get fired, get another job, and the person that fires you joins your new company

According to his bio on the CBS5 website and his Facebook page, Preston Phillips is officially the new Wake Up Arizona co-anchor!
