Carolina Gold flips to rock

Yep. Some of the FMs we think of as regional in the Strand are really only regional because of repeater/ translators .. such as Easy 105.9 (or 100.7) or El Gallo (don't know the specifics but 102.3 and 103.5 anyway.) The 'locals' that don't (Kiss 98.5 and Fake News 94.5) can be a challenge to hear in some parts of Horry County.
Easy 105.9 has a really strong signal (I think it reaches Wilmington) but does need the second frequency in Georgetown.

I've never understood why Kiss doesn't simulcast on the north end. WYAK, which is now Sunny 103.1, did that with 94.9.

94.5 used to simulcast 105.9.

I guess a 'market area' that is 25 miles wide and 80 miles long will always have peculiarities.

This player is silent/dormant as of this post - but could see it (maybe? eventually?)
being used to stream the "new" Carolina Country 93.9 WMIR:

Just tuned in '90s Rock The Coast', unid on 93.9. Wish some of the 103/104 wannabes would find a niche. Maybe 94.9 the Surf took some of the luster from Carolina Gold.
The Surf has to be one of the worst radio stations I have ever heard. Yucky 70s sounding jocks and a music mix that is a mess. If the Surf were smart after seeing the success of Carolina Gold, they would evolve into a 60s 70s Oldies station. Why not?

The Surf has now been around for 26 years. Gold lasted two and a half years. What success did they have?

The mix is beach music which can cover a wide variety of time periods and styles. Hardly a mess. The dj style is a deliberate choice too. Obviously it doesn't work for you but it works for the people who listen.to the advertising.

I don't care that much for the beach music either. Too many unfamiliar songs. That doesn't mean I couldn't learn to like the individual songs. Carolina Gold has better songs but a lot of songs I don't like too. I've made an effort over the years to learn to like the songs on my local Good Time Oldies affiliate, but I'd much rather have softer music. And "soft" doesn't describe Easy 105.9 either, since that station's loud music is worse than Carolina Gold's loud music.

You'd think if there was one place in the US that so called 'Beautiful Music ' format FMs would hang on it would be Myrtle Beach. All it takes is one miss to destroy the Easy vibe promised on 105.9

But it did! Easy 105.9 kept playing beautiful music, taking over from Joy 92, until 2005 or 2006. Toward the end it was one-third instrumental.

Easy quit being "easy" in 2020 but it was moving away from that anyway. Then it came back to being sort of soft after a year and a half.

Far better ratings than the Surf. But it's tough in 2024 even with solid ratings to get support from the advertising community. Fortunately Carolina Gold lives on on the internet.

Maybe 'The Elevator' instead 'Easy' would bring back those days..

Where do you get that? Neither Surf nor Easy appears in the 12-plus ratings on the site I go to.

By the way, despite the format being so conservative, Easy was number one when it actually was still "easy", but sometime before it stopped being "easy" it was no longer listed. The Sun News had a reporter writing about radio changes but he wouldn't write about Easy when it changed, since he said they were having trouble making up their mind what exactly they were going to do. I eventually found someone at the paper who did write about it, and his article said they had lost 70 percent of their audience before the change.

There are better places to hear oldies online.

It has been tried. Remember Movin' 94.5?

It became The Tide, then The Tide went Hot AC when Easy 105.9 changed from standards to soft AC.
I remember trying to listen to Movin' when I would visit here before moving permanently. In this area at least, It was (and still is) an interference battle between it and The Hawk in Wilmington.

Yeah. It used to be a simulcast partner to Easy. The former WGTN-FM was pretty much useless unless it was as well. Easy took it over when 94.5 went its own way.
