Carolina sports broadcasts on 99.9FM?

This weekend, the Tar Heel Sports Network aired Carolina baseball games on 99.9 The Fan, in addition to WCHL-AM 1360. Could this be the beginning of the transition where the football and men's basketball broadcasts move over from "Yuck Radio One-Oh-Sux-One"? If Carolina moves over to 99.9, this would give Capitol Broadcasting affiliates of all three local ACC teams (Duke on 620 The Buzz, Carolina on 99.9 The Fan, and N.C. State on Mix 101.5). Has anyone heard anything on a possible affiliate change? They did this five years ago after 100.7 dumped oldies and became The River; since then, WRDU, who succeeded 100.7, has changed formats twice in three years.

Tell that to talk stations like WPHT (Phillies flagship and Rush affiliate), WTIC (Red Sox station and UConn flagship and Rush affiliate), etc. Then again, the two examples I cited are not owned by Clear Channel...

That is a good point, and you could add WLW in Cincinnati to the list with their coverage of Reds baseball, if it makes money for these stations and others, especially in larger markets, it's not a problem, some of those have local hosts that gets bumped but for those who carry nationally sydnicated programs, when they get pre-empted, i'm sure they get listeners complaints, but with many games at night and on weekends, they are very few.

UNC Baseball was on 850 for the past several years for weekend series. The contract moved over with the sale of the stations to Capitol. I wouldn't anticpate any changes in the revenue sports, though. When 106 went talk, they actually picked up more UNC programming (coaches shows) away from 850.

If this is the case, will other affiliations formerly carried by 850 (Panthers, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio, etc.) migrate over? The IMS network carries exclusive radio coverage of the Indy 500 and the NASCAR Brickyard race (94.7 only carries NASCAR races aired by MRN or PRN).
Another affiliation I've noticed that seems to have "disappeared" since the Capitol sports deal was the Bobcats (formerly carried by the old 620 The Bull). Where did they go?

I don't recall reading any announcement about which station will carry Carolina Panthers in the fall. The Panthers website still lists WRBZ/850 as an affiliate -- it hasn't been updated.

WDOX 570 - the "home of the Docs" is now the home of the Cats, too!

Good thing the Panthers will play most of their games at 1pm during the midday. 52 watts nighttime power.... Ouch!!

Oops, the Bobcats... They usually play at night..... Not good.

Not those Cats... they meant the Charlotte Bobcats (basketball) and the Carolina Mudcats (baseball). Still no word on any local Panthers affiliates aside from 101.1, which is technically in the GSO market but reaches here too.

Actually, I only meant the Bobcats and not the Mudcats... 52 watts? Those West Coast trips must be brutal!

They were also listed as carrying all Final Four games involving Duke--at the top of the page!

850 did carry all of Duke's BB games. The stations were sold mid-season, so the contract stayed in place.

I don't think the paper listed 850 AM for most of the games. They just got the call letters wrong the last few times.

Do they still have the Triple Crown races?

The Bobcats scaled back their network for 2009-10 (they wanted to a year earlier but the NBA said no) and did not have a Triangle affiliate. WDOX did not air the Bobcats this season but continues to air minor league Carolina Mudcats baseball games.

The Mudcats added WDWG 98.5 this season to cover the Rocky Mount and Wilson areas.

The paper didn't list the games, as things were pretty sparse at 850, and no one told the N&O the games were on. I believe the Triple Crown has moved to Capitol as well, but I'm not sure. I am sure it's not on 850, though.

This is not entirely accurate.

It was rumored that the team had decided to do away with radio altogether before the 2008-09 season. The NBA told them they had to have radio. I was told that all but a few stations (7 I think) were paid to carry the games before the 2008 season.

In order to save some money the team decided to only pay to be on in Charlotte, Spartanburg and the Triad (as best I can recall) starting with the 2008-09 season.

Starting with the 09-10 season the team decided to cut back on the personnel working the game. The studio host was let go along with a producer and home sideline reporter. That left only the play by play announcer and engineer/producer.

The games are still made available via Citadel Media Satellite if a station chooses to be an affiliate.

I for one, as a sports fan and radio listener who doesn't have cable/satellite television, would love to hear the Bobcats back on the radio here in Durham. I really would have enjoyed the playoffs, even 4 straight losses.
