'Carpool Karaoke' primetime special coming to CBS; being shopped as weekly series

James Corden will host an hour-long “Carpool Karaoke” special on CBS, TheWrap has learned.

The prime-time special will feature an all new “Carpool Karaoke” with global superstar Jennifer Lopez as well as highlights from past segments, plus James Corden‘s favorite moments from his first year as host of “The Late Late Show.”

The show holds the YouTube record for the most watched late-night clip with Adele’s “Carpool Karaoke,” which has over 84 million views at the time of this publishing. The show’s YouTube Channel has amassed more than 800 million total views and 3.9 million subscribers since the show’s premiere on March 23, 2015.

“Carpool Karaoke” has proven to be Corden’s most popular segment. The Justin Bieber edition was named one of YouTube’s Top 10 most viral videos of 2015. Other notable passengers include One Direction, Iggy Azalea, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo and more.

“The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special” will air March 29 at 10 p.m./9c on CBS.

Not coincidentally, the special announcement follows a report that CBS Studios, James Corden, and Fulwell 73 are shopping a Carpool Karaoke series. Corden would not host but would make appearances in the project, looking to cash in on the franchise’s enormous popularity, in much the same way The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’s franchise Lip Sync Battle got spun-off into a successful series on Spike.

‘Carpool Karaoke’ TV Series Lands At Apple Music

Apple Music and CBS Television Studios have inked an exclusive first-window licensing agreement under which Apple Music will be the global home of CBS’ anticipated new Carpool Karaoke series. The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios and Ben Winston’s production company, Fulwell 73. James Corden and Winston are creators and executive producers. CBS Studios International and Fulwell 73 had been shopping the series for an international home.

Based on the segment that has become a global, viral video sensation on The Late Late Show With James Corden, the Carpool Karaoke series will consist of 16 episodes. In each episode, celebrities will ride along and sing along with the host (to be announced) as they visit places meaningful to the celebrity, sing tunes from their personal playlists and surprise fans who don’t expect to see big stars belting out tunes one lane over.

Each week, a new episode will become available exclusively to Apple Music subscribers in more than 100 countries. A host for this new series and a premiere date will be announced later, with production slated to begin soon.

The popular “Carpool Karaoke” will continue to be a recurring segment on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Hmmmm interesting. The series will have a different host. Corden is a big reason why this has been a hit. He'll be tough to replace.

Also interesting that it'll be digital distribution only. This way, it doesn't have to conform with network standards, timing, commercial load, etc. Had it been syndicated to commercial TV, they would probably have to do more than 16 shows.

I think this works fine as a show segment, much less so on its own. I wonder if McDonald's will remain as a sponsor?

The fact that they're doing it as on-demand digital distribution means the pressure for it to work is less. The best example is what Seinfeld is doing on Krackle. The difference is that this show will be able to use the TV show to promote it and push people there. That's what digital needs: Push.
