Carson Daly

Has anybody seen his show as of late? I couldn't stand his talk show, and many seemed to agree as many didn't stick around after Conan to check out his show. But, about a month before Conan's last show, his show has seemed to revamp. No longer is he in the studio, but he's touring the country (of course mainly staying in L.A.) and checking out different acts and venues. This, to me, seems to be more of his element. He's not a talk show host. He sucks doing a monologue. But, getting out and shooting various acts documentary style seems to do really well. I really like it. What do you think?

I saw some of it a couple of nights ago and stopped just because I was interested in the camera shots they were taking. Very uncharacteristic of a talk show. The program seems to have a style more reminiscent of what Daly did on TRL.

I saw a glimpse of one the other night. Looks like Carson returning to his MTV (not TRL though) roots.

This also may be part of NBC Universal mandated budget cuts. The cost is dramatically reduced. Probably only four or five people (host, cameraman, producer, editor, assistant) on staff compared to the dozens it takes for a studio show (host, several cameramen, a couple of producers, technicians, musicians, caterers, etc...).

The show is headed for cancellation. Carson probably knew it for a while, and asked to be considered for Conan's replacement as a result. Sounds like to me this was the option...field show with small staff, or no show at all.

I call it more, new age "documentary" style. I run it on Friday nights, so I'm stuck with it. But, compared with the studio talk show format, this is more of his style. He really sucked as a talk show host, so there is no way he would ever get Late Night.

This format is also more music intensive, or subject intensive (grasping for straws, they recorded him going to a tatoo parlor to get new ink, and featured the artist on the show, probably to get the tat for free). So far, his show has showcased some unknown, up and coming artists that I, at least, liked. Desperate, it may be, but I think it's got potential.

I watched this former train wreck of a show last night. While tuned in, something unbelievable happened. I DIDN'T TUNE OUT! Carson is finally back in his element. He no longer looked stiff and uncomfortable. The show was actually enjoyable to watch. I now realize that it was never Carson that I hated. It was that horrible show that I didn't like! However It is now 100 times. Hell.... it's a 1000 times better than what it was before. NBC might have somehow managed to rescue this sinking ship afterall.

Its horrible actually. The idea was to be a talk show. Why would I stay up to watch some canned documentary? This is not what NBC hired him for.

I really think you need to give it a chance. It's so much better than what NBC originally hired him for. He still gets in the studio and now interviews guests in a T-shirt instead of wearing a suit and tie. The standard interview desk is gone and now it's a half hour of casual conversation. It's much better!

The interview segments look like when Carson first took over the time slot. When he was still in NYC there were two chairs, a small table, him and the guest. That lasted a couple years before NBC moved him to LA stuck him in a suit and plopped the guy behind a desk like everyone else. That's about the time I stopped watching unless he had a guest on that I liked.

I have seen a couple of the new shows and you guys are right, he looks a lot happier than being in a studio. Hope NBC lets him stay on for a while and doesnt kill the show.

I've actually been watching the show now as opposed to switching the channel at 1:37 like I used to do. I can't stress how much better the program is now. They even built a big stage outside for the musical acts called The Vegas stage (or some similar name). In back of the stage I saw a building with a lit sign that said Studio 11. I'm assuming that this is Carson's studio at NBC. I've been inside that studio several times before Carson even got to town. I don't know what NBC's long range plan is for Carson. But if I am now watching a show which two weeks I ago I absolutely hated, than that has to make NBC pretty happy.

Agreed. It's not his place to be a conventional late-night talk show host. And, I'm liking the new musical artists. Because of Carson I now know of N.A.S.A., two hip-hop DJs reminiscent of Beastie Boys, who's album has the last recordings of ODB and Melanie Fiona, a strong R&B artist who's debut album releases in May.

I really do think this format has a lot of potential, and it just might save Carson's career. Otherwise, he would've been toast.

I too have been sticking around to see the show, although I have always checked in after Conan because I loved his show.
The new format is very "MTV", which may prove to be a winner as MTV is all reality and such at this point. Although I do wish that they would shoot in 16:9!!! The old 4:3 gets so hard to deal with following the HD amazingness of Jimmy. NBC does a EXCELENT job with HD and needs to migrate all their shows to the format.
When the “Documentary style” shows the other cameras, they look a lot like consumer camcorders, so im not sure if that would happen too soon with budget cuts. :(

Just saw one of those cams when Dr Drew was recording with his iPhone to twitter the vid. It is. A mini-DV handheld.
