I tried to fine tune my Sonifex cart machine playback unit. Using the ITC record unit as a reference meter, the ITC playback units as standard players and a 1000hz cart.
Issue: When I match the output levels of the sonifex machine to the same as the ITCs output levels I got a terrible distorted sound. What's the cause (ok, I know...) for this? ???

Most cart machines were set up to have around +4 to +8 into 600 ohms, --which is typical for the ITC premium line decks. I would suspect that there is a problem with the Sonifex units then.

Going for the simplest problem first--wiring error on the output. If these are transformer balanced out, having one lead on one leg of the transformer and another going to ground, rather than the other side of the transformer, will give you very weak audio. You can have the same problem with transformerless balanced out. Then when you turn up the output to match the ITC machines you are overdriving the output amplifier. Unless you have a book, you may need to open the critter up and trace the wiring. Don't assume everyone wires similar looking connectors in the same way ;-) !

Same symptom--but actual problem--a broken wire between the audio output card and the output connector, resulting in only half of a balanced output circuit being connected.

Another possibility--not being familiar with these machines, is that the output is unbalanced. Some of the older lever-type machines were built like this. Your console may not like the unbalanced output.
