Central Mass. Carter Broadcasting sells WACE Chicopee/Springfield

The station now goes from Evangelical Christian and Barter to Roman Catholic. 5,000 watts days but only 8 watts at night, all non-directional. No translator.

No shortage of elderly Catholics in Chicopee and vicinity. It will likely attract an appreciative, if small, audience, much as WJMJ does in the Hartford area.

To compare WJMJ to catholic radio or christian station is like comparing night and day.

WJMJ is much more mainstream and music oriented to an oldies-ish variety.. filled with veteran QWDRC and WRCH air talent and has a bigger audience than you are assuming

Indeed. WJMJ in the combined April, May and June books was 6th in 12+ in the Hartford market. While the audience is predominantly over 55, that's not a concern with a Catholic station. It simply has a big audience!

Wow! I've never seen any numbers for that station before. They must not be Nielsen subscribers.

To be fair, WJMJ is no typical religious station. Its weekday format is unique -- music from the '50s through today from midnight through 7 p.m., followed by religious-oriented programming, including a syndicated Christian contemporary music countdown show. During its music hours, there are regular breaks for bite-size bits of Catholic dogma, insight into holiday traditions, and even a "Saint of the Day" feature, along with Catholic news, which usually contains updates on the fight against abortion, same-sex marriage and the like. The biggest surprise in its numbers is the sheer volume of forgotten hits played every day. That 55+ crowd either must not mind "bad songs" as much as conventional radio wisdom would indicate, or at least it tolerates bizarre half-hours like this just to get to the Catholic bits during the stop sets:
David Bowie -- Let's Dance
Savage Garden -- I Knew I Loved You
Barry Manilow -- Can't Smile Without You
JD Souther -- You're Only Lonely
Gary Lewis/Playboys -- Count Me In
Bobby Caldwell -- What You Won't Do For Love
Steve Winwood -- Valerie
Elvis Presley -- Little Sister

That was from Monday's p.m. drive. The last three songs played just now were Barry Gibb and Keith Urban's "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," Jerry Butler's "Make It Easy on Yourself," and Suzy Bogguss' "Outbound Plane"! And earlier in the hour, a sequence of Robbie Williams/Four Seasons/Babyface/Staple Singers/Chad & Jeremy.
