Cascada... breaking new ground??

Has there ever been a dance song that's been this high on the Pop charts? Ok... I mean an ORIGINAL dance song. Not a remake of a classic 80's song!

Doesn't that say loads about this song?
______________

Not like "Heaven" redone by DJ Sammy and "Listen to your Heart" by DHT.
______________

The lyrics are mostly orginial, but you are right the orginial was not a hit...and the dance board calls this an orginial that is succesfull, and not a "remake or a 80's song like "listen to your heart, heaven, boys of summer, like a prayer, into the grove and more"

Actually, it only uses some of the lyrics from the aforementioned song, but for the most part the lyrics are original.

Here are many of the other Dance tunes that have hit big nationally. I believe all these songs either made the Top 20 on Billboard's Hot 100, or the Top 20 on the CHR/Pop charts, and many of these records peaked inside the Top 10 as well.

Madonna "Ray of Light"
Real MCcoy "Another Night"
Real MCcoy "Run Away"
Dirty Vegas "Days Go By"
Robert Miles "Children"
Sonique "Feels So Good"
Culture Beat "Mr. Vein"
Ace of Base "The Sign"
Ace of Base "All That She Wants"
Snap "Rhythm Is A Dancer"
Snap "The Power"
Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch "Good Vibrations"
Cher "Believe"
Madonna "Vogue"
No Mercy "Where Do You Go"
Madonna "Music"
Eiffel 65 "Blue"
C&C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat"
Information Society "Whats On Your Mind"
Cece Penniston "Finally"
Corona "Rhythm of the Night"
Dee Light "Groove Is In The Heart"
Corina "Temptation"
La Bouche "Be My Lover"
La Bouche "Sweet Dreams"
Robin S. "Show Me Love"
Kylie Minogue "Can't Get You Out of My Head"
Daniel Bedingfield "Gotta Get Through This"
Cathy Dennis "Touch Me (All Night Long)"
Technotronic "Pump Up The Jam"
Captain Hollywood Project "More & More"
Jocelyn Enriquez "Do You Miss Me"
Crystal Waters "100% Pure Love"
Crystal Waters "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)"
Amber "This Is Your Night"
Amber "Sexual"
EMF "Unbelievable"
Bizarre Inc. "I'm Gonna Get You"

Madonna's "Hung Up" actually made the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 a few months ago if I'm not mistaken.

WOW CHRles - THANKS for bringing back all of those great dance memories from the not too distant past. Here's hoping that the recent European dance smashes on the U.S. CHR-POP chart is an increasing trend and not merely a fad that comes and goes all too quickly. CHR needs to get back on the dance floor !

You guys should hear what Xhto 104.3 in El Paso is playing. They have Armand Van Buren-Hear my name in rotation. I know its an old song, but better late than never. XHTO plays quite a bit of Dance music actually, though im not too sure whether XHTO is a CHR, or a Rhythmic. It definatly has a Rhythmic playlist... Im gonna have to look this up real quick,,, I think XHTO might be a Rhythmic chr.

Radio & Records lists XHTO as a CHR-Rhythmic station, and they get rather decent ratings too - a 4.6 in the last book. That's actually down from a 7.3 in the Summer, but a 4.6 is still decent.

I checked out their most recent playlist, and aside from Madonna's "Sorry" in heavy rotation I didn't see any other dance tracks listed. The're obviously heavy into the hip hop and rap scene. I guess they have a decent dance mix show on weekend nights when they play the 'real' dance music ?

A few weeks ago, They were playing Armand Van Heldon every few hours, Im seriously gonna have to listen and do a log or something. They had quite a few Recurrents as well.
Edited by midwestclubber on 03/21/06 11:54 PM.

More than half of those I don't consider a "dance" record. Some are just Rhythymic records, some are urban, some are pop. Just because you can dance to it, doesn't make it dance.

Also, most of those are more than 5 years old. For a while, this type of music was ignored by CHR.

Believe me my friend, I know what "Dance" music is very well. The songs I listed would be considered Dance by 99 percent of the folks who post over on the Dance board:
http://www.radio-info.com/mods/posts?Board=dance

Some of the people on that board host Dance mix shows, head up record labels, or produce Dance music.
Sure, some of those songs are by Pop artists (Cher, Madonna), but that doesn't mean they're not Dance records. Most are obviously not underground Dance (which I'm a huge fan of), but then neither is the Cascada song.

Your sentence "Just because you can dance to it, doesn't make it dance" is true - a lot of Hip Hop and uptempo R&B records are HUGE in some clubs, but that doesn't make them Dance records.

.....Every single song on his list are Dance songs, that charted on both the Dance and POP charts. Dance was more mainstream, and less underground back in the 80s and 90s. Can you list some examples of songs from his list, that you dont consider to be Dance?

They do play quite a deep flavor of dance, mostly re-currents and golds, but still for a "CHR/Rhythmic" station in this day and age they play quite a bit. Their owner/operator has a hard-on for dance music and wants them to play as much as they can without sacrificing the advertiser. So far the clients love it, and in call-out dance looks good in that market.

Latino females are most of the dance music buying audience in this country, I dunno why more "RHYTHMIC" CHRs don't try to conrner it like XHTO and KYLD have. Hell, by radio definition "RHYTHMIC" should be anything without guitars, so why not dance music too??

I agree. In fact when the format began evolving in the mid-1980s Dance was indeed a component of the genre. I would love to see this part returning to its origins, and hopefully soon.

BTW XHTO's rival in El Paso KPRR has also been playing Dance as well, and given that area's large hispanic population as well as having a reputation for being a military and college town and having a border city in Mexico to go clubbin', this fits in with their target audience.

You forgot Real McCoy's Another Night and Run Away...also Blue was #1 R&R CHR/Pop...oops didn't read below Madonna...sorry.
