CASEY KASEM CALLS IT QUITS

there are alot of "Talented People" in radio, but ryan seacrest ISN'T one of them. seriously, does anyone think this guy is in the same league with Kasey Kasem? Dick Clark in his day, or Machine Gun Kelly, Charlie Tuna.... he isn't funny, he isn't interesting, i'm just not sure what his appeal is... if anybody knows PLEASE make your case for the great mr. seacrest...
well, there's your anti-seacrest rant...be careful what you ask for...
I agree with you. I don't think Seacrest is very talented either. The only thing he has going for him is his voice. I was actually funny and interesting when he and Lisa Fox did the afternoon drive show on KYSR!
Ok, he has a Voice, so does Richard Simmons.

I've never understood the appeal of Seacrest. The whole thing is a mystery to me.

Does this mean no more AT 20 either?
AT20 is what he's retiring from. AT40 has been hosted by Ryan Seacrest for several years now.
I recently discovered AT10 on a station near me. Does anyone know if this program is three hours like AT20? Seems that a countdown of only 10 songs, but lasting three hours, would need a LOT of filler, LDDs, extras, and oh yeah, commercials!

And Casey sounded awfully "tired" on that program. Still sad to see him go!

No one was making a GD concerted effort to not have him read a damn death dedication coming out of an uptempo record. They do this to him every time.

Have you heard the outakes of him getting really pissed at his producer for doing that? It is very funny!! I never thought that Kasem could get that mad and use profanity too!

Wonder how long it will be until the anti-Seacrest backlash starts. He seems like a nice guy, but it also seems like he is everywhere, like there is just no avoiding him! This is bound to catch up with him eventually.

What Ryan Seacrest is (in my opinion) is a smart and reasonably engaging guy that's been able to build his franchise through hard work and the help of others. There's nothing wrong with that. The comparison to Dick Clark is a good one - if you're old enough to have seen American Bandstand, you know that all Clark ever did was introduce rock groups, talk to kids, and sit at a podium while the kids were dancing. He was a good looking guy with only a small amount of charisma. But he was a talented marketer and producer.

Seacrest's edited show runs in the afternoons in the Bay Area on Star 101.3 (Hot AC), and I think it's OK...at least there's some content, so it's a lot better than the voice-tracked crap it replaced.

Keep in mind that when Casey Kasem was tapped by Ron Jacobs to do AT40, he was the weekend and fill-in guy on the also-ran Top 40 station. The dance party show he had hosted (Shebang!) had been canceled a couple of years before that. He was a good guy with an average voice who just happened to latch onto a gimmick that fit AT40 perfectly...right place, right time. I don't think any PD of the time ever considered Casey for a drive-time show.

The irony of the matter is that the average listener wouldn't give a flying leap if an LDD came after an uptempo record. They would never know the difference, and still wouldn't have, if this hadn't leaked out. Someone must have had it in for "the Case." Apparently, someone that he was yelling at in that tirade! ;D

Apparently, the Seacrest AT40 is an entirely different animal from the Casey version. Doesn't Seacrest do phone interviews (something Casey never did), and isn't the Seacrest version sort of a "one-stop" for all entertainment information? Doesn't he interview actors who have no connection at all to the music charts? In other words, actors who don't also sing?

And I'm guessing that stations download Seacrest, so no records or CDs to pull out of the trash can afterwards, and listen to years later! ;D But that's probably a good thing!

I'll answer a few of these ?'s. AT-10 does just countdown (or did) 10 songs an fills the gaps w/ extras an always spotlights something, whether its the biggest movie hits or on the last show, biggest hits of the last 40 years.

Ryans AT40, yes, very different from Casey. Filled w/ gossip from hollywood an interviews w/ SOME music artists an the rest are actors/actresses, sleaze reports, etc. Very lil music news an nothing like Caseys show. The top40 songs of the week are just an after thought. Ryans there to tell you this an that an Oh yea, here is number 28.

I also remember listening to AT 40 on KRLA in 1971.

I remember one edition in which Carole King's 'It's Too Late' soared from #6 to #1 in a single week, and being the master storyteller which we all knew Casey to be, he descibed the very harrowing ordeal with some Cherokee Indians which songwriter John D. Loudermilk encountered in North Carolina in 1968, an encounter which inspired him to write '(The Lament of The Cherokee) Indian Reservation by the Raiders (formerly known as Paul Revere & The Raiders), which replaced Ms. King @ #1 at Billboard in July of 1971.

Your screen name reminds me to ask, whatever became of Shadoe Stevens? He took over AT40 for Casey in the late '80s, after which Casey went on to "Casey's Top 40," which I believe was based on Radio & Records surveys. But didn't Casey return to AT40 at some point? And whatever happened to Shadoe? And did anyone ever take over what had been "Casey's" top 40 countdown? I know I have a lot of questions. Thanks!

Shadoe went on to minor fame in television...he was announcer on Craig Ferguson's late night show for awhile, and he had a decent size recurring role in the sitcom Dave's World in the 90s. He continues to do commercials and voice-overs.

Is Fred Rated still around? We don't have Federated in the Bay Area, but for a couple of years in the 90s, Shadoe did TV ads for car dealer Lloyd Wise ("the Wise Guys") in Oakland. His character in the ads was "Boyd Wise," a virtual copy of Fred Rated. 'The Wise Guys' sold Oldsmobiles and Daewoos, so needless to say, they're out of business.

Shadoe's stuff is all over You Tube, and naturally, he has a website:

He's still the announcer for Ferguson albeit in extremely small amounts. I don't even think he attends tapings since all he does is announce Craig at the top of the show (it's always the same take) and is used sparingly in voice over intros for Craig's bits like "Michael Caine in Space" (probably also just phoned in on tape).

Casey left AT40 in Aug '88 an Shadoe took over. Shadoe continued on until the show went dormant (off the air) in Jan '95 although syndication in the USA had stopped 6 months earlier. Casey finally returned when he started Caseys Top 40 in Jan '89. Which kinda sucks that Casey did NOT do any end-of-the-year show in '88 (likewise for '09 - infinity). Casey left CT40 in Feburary I think of 1998, an for 4 weeks either Ed McMahon or Jeff Wyatt was the host of what was called "Top 40 countdown". Casey had obtained the rights to American Top 40 an Westwood one didnt want to use it so Casey took a month off to find someone who would.......AMFM Radio networks......Which resumed American Top 40 on 3/28/98, an also Top 40 countdown ceased to exist. Casey continued w/ AT40 till he passed it on to Ryan in '04.

I have to say,Casey, Have fun in retirement, you deserve it.But, you will be missed,I know I will miss that voice.I've been listening to that voice since the early 70's.But .Casey, If you get bored with the little VO gigs.you can come out and countdown anything in the world.
