Casey Kasem In A Bad Way

In the CHR forum, I posted a link to the People magazine story about Casey. We could post this story in every thread on this site---it would be overkill but it would also be appropriate because I don't think there is anyone over the age of ten who doesn't know who Casey Kasem is. The longtime DJ and American Top 40 host has an advanced stage of Parkinson's disease and his wife Jean will not allow friends or family to visit him. The man who always urged his listeners to "keep reaching for the stars" deserves better.

On July 5, 2009 Casey hosted his final countdown show after 39 years. Here is an excerpt on good ol' YouTube:

I just learned that another former KRLA disc jockey is not doing well. Most people here in Los Angeles are familiar with Johnnie Darin. He was at KRLA, 1968-71, and (as John Darin) was a KFWB newsman from 1998 to 2008. He also worked at KIIS, KDAY, KROQ, KNAC, KGOE, KNX, KGIL, KJOI and business-news KBLA. He has stage four cancer and is in a nursing home in Utah.

Johnnie Darin is now at a medical center in Washington, near where his sister and family live. You can write him at Providence Mother Joseph Care Center, 3333 Ensign Road NE, Room A6, Olympia WA 98506.

Johnnie Darin died of pancreatic cancer on March 7. Earl McDaniel, who worked at KPOP. KFWB, KEWB, KFMB and KGMB, died on March 26. McDaniel's obituary is at http://www.radiodiscussions.com/showthread.php?660548-KPOP-KFWB-s-Earl-McDaniel-Has-Died

As for Casey Kasem, his daughter Kerri and Assemblyman Mike Gatto are trying to get a bill passed which would allow children the right to visit their sick or dying parents. Casey's second wife, Jean (Kerri's stepmother), initially refused to let Kerri see her father. To help pass the legislation, Kerri started the Casem Cares Foundation. But neither Jean nor Kerri has been saying much about Casey's health. Last October, TMZ said that he had just a few months to live. Does anyone know how Casey is doing now?

In October 2013, Kerri Kasem, one of Casey Kasem's three children from his first marriage, said her father was suffering from Parkinson's disease.[8] On October 1, Kerri Kasem, her siblings and Casey Kasem's brother protested outside Casey and Jean Kasem's home, saying Jean Kasem had been preventing contact with Casey Kasem for three months.[8][9] On October 7, Julie Kasem and her husband, Dr. Jamil Aboulhosn, filed a conservatorship petition to place Casey Kasem under their care

Does anyone know what happened?

Not so far, but I must say it doesn't put the current wife in a very good light, not letting the father see his children or vice versa; but...farbeit from me to note what happens when one wife supplants the former and has to look over her shoulder and take other measures to hold onto the whole ball of wax.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel Murphy has named Casey Kasem's daughter Kerri as temporary conservator. Last week Casey's wife Jean took Casey out of a Santa Monica convalescent home and his whereabouts are unknown. The judge ordered Jean to tell Kerri where Casey is. The drama continues.

Then his wife should be held in contempt of court and a bench warrant issued for her immediate arrest...and don't forget to log in all that bling and wardrobe for all to see. But maybe that is why I am not the judge, because I would have neither patience nor tolerance for kidnapping of a man who is ill. Instead of all that wardrobe and bling he could have gotten deep brain stimulation therapy. But I am not a doctor either. On the common sense side, you just don't get in between daddy and his little girl.

Sheriff's deputies have discovered Jean and Casey Kasem at another family's home in Kitsap County in Washington state. Jean's lawyer had said that Casey was "not in the United States." So a lawyer has lied? I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you!

The article posted by RD on a different thread indicates that "they" both told the Sheriff's deputies that they were fine and on vacation. I thought he could no longer speak at all.

Radio Buzz is reporting that Jean Kasem threw raw meat at Kerry Kasem, saying that in the name of King David she threw raw meat in the street in exchange for her husband and wild dogs <paraphrased?>. Sounds to me more like a temper tantrum for getting caught negligently letting her husband languish, not even keeping him comfortable...bed sores, lung and bladder infections.

"Keep reaching for the stars," Casey. Here is today's sad news from TMZ:

Legendary DJ Casey Kasem will live out his final days this week surrounded by his children who have made the decision to withhold medication, food and fluids. The judge in Casey's conservatorship case just reversed a ruling which required doctors to keep him alive with nourishment and meds. The 82-year-old is currently in a Washington hospice facility. Casey's kids tell TMZ their dad's health directive document states, "If the extension of my life would result in mere biological existence, devoid of cognitive function, with no reasonable hope for normal functioning, then I do not desire any form of life-sustaining procedures, including nutrition and hydration." Casey's wife Jean was in court and furious over the judge's decision, storming out and screaming that the kids will have Casey's blood on their hands.

Again, he is comfortable. The advance medical directive says he doesn't want life sustaining procedures, including nutrition and hydration, and I would bet he directed that he wants to be kept comfortable.

Sad news, although not unexpected: Casey Kasem has died. He passed away at 3:25 AM June 15, 2014, in the Washington hospital where he had spent the past two weeks. His children -- Kerri, Mike and Julie -- posted this statement on Facebook: "Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends."

KFI Sunday evening host Wayne Resnick just offered this observation: "Casey Kasem is to popular music what Walter Cronkite was to news." Right on!
