Casey Kasem Marathon on KFRC

Dunno if it's just today or all-weekend, but they're playing AT40 episodes back-to-back-to-back. A fun listen. But there's no mention of it whatsoever on their website -- why do something like this without promoting it?

They ran a promo for at least a week & it's on the first banner on the web site...it changes every couple of seconds...guess you didn't wait around long enough.
It's called "weekend programming" that no one else is doing.
:)

To the best of my knowledge, CASEY KASEM'S AT40 never was on KFRC when it was on THE BIG 610. They were on the old KYA-1260 in the 1970's and I THINK KIOI-101.3 in the 1980's.

You thunk correctly when you mentioned CC on KIOI back in the 1980's.

I have tried in vain to have stations doing their own version of a top 40 countdown, not with CC, but instead with their own local personalities, my aim being to try and inject some fun flipping localism into the mix. No, not a one has taken my suggestion to the bank.

I fear the ultimate demise of the craft sooner rather than later if the ignorance continues.

It will.

Before the debut of AT40 in 1970, Casey had been doing virtually the same show on KRLA/1110 in Los Angeles. As I remember - he would usually count-down the KRLA playlist, but would also frequently do countdowns from the rankings from Cashbox magazine, not Billboard.

And before that he originated the banter about the songs on KEWB (now KNEW) in Oakland after the PD told him not to do the cartoon voices he had been doing, and he wanted another schtick.

I loved listening to all of those AT40 episodes from the 1970s!!!!! Maybe KYLD or KIOI should do the same with the 1980s episodes of AT40 on Christmas weekend! HMMMM!

I assume you meant that American Top 40 was never on KFRC when it was on in the Bay Area, Madman?

I'm sure that's what Madman meant. During the Drake years, I don't think either KFRC or KHJ ran any music programming that wasn't live and local with live DJs. The only exception would have been The History of Rock and Roll Special. And of course, they had a news department, and ran Sunday morning public service programming. Quite a contrast to radio, these days.

RE: The origination of Casey's story-telling about songs and artists...As David Kaye indicated, Casey started that at KEWB/91 in the early 60s. According to the story Casey himself tells, the PD asked him to stop with comedy schtick...I guess he wasn't good at it. But I guess the PD didn't give him any other useful advice. Wandering around the studio wondering what to do, Casey found a discarded teen-fan magazine in the trash, read it - and then started using the material on air.

KNEW ran AT 40 when the station was oldies in the early '70s. AT 40 was on as early as '72 and perhaps earlier. I believe it was dropped when the station flipped to country in '75.

I wonder if any stations run any of the old episodes of AT40 that had other people filling in for him. I have a couple- one is Gary Owens filling in from around '81.

This Casey marathon smells of a station that has no clue what to do. After this weeks ratings it's obvious they have no clue. javascript:void(0);

I wish KFRC would go back to running Casey Kasem on Saturday nights .

What turned me really off to AR40 was Shadow Stevens. I have a Westwood One promo cassette somewhere with guys auditioning for Casey's job when he came back after WO took over. "I was wondering if you guys in the booth noticed this sweater I'm wearing? I buy my sweaters the same place he buys his sweaters & I'll be back every week with new sweaters..."

I have a rather strange idea why not run more local programing with local "talent" and have live requests and dedications or bubbling under songs. Why not highlight a group or artist or a Saturday night dance party request show?

I could never understand why people dissed Shadoe Stevens so often. Is he an a__hole in person, or something? I always thought he was a clever jock when he was local in LA in the early 70s (KHJ, KRLA); he had some modest success as an actor; and some of his advertising ("Fred Rated," and so forth) was very clever.

Does anybody remember when he briefly re-created Fred Rated in the Bay Area? Late 1980s, I think. He was "Boyd Wise," for now long defunct Lloyd Wise Motors in Oakland. It was very amusing, and probably sold a few Oldsmobiles.

Quote from radiodx: "I have a rather strange idea why not run more local programing with local "talent" and have live requests and dedications or bubbling under songs. Why not highlight a group or artist or a Saturday night dance party request show?"

Speaking of KFRC, I've noticed that this weekend, Big Tom Parker is on - he's one of the better jocks from the Big 610 era. Unfortunately, in typical 106.9 KFRC fashion, he only gets to open the mike once during each set for about 15 seconds. When the station won't give good jocks a little more air-time, I don't think there's much chance for live request and dedications. Too hard to voice-track.

It's funny. I remember AT40 and yet I can't remember what station it was on. In those days I don't think it was on an FM (FM hadn't made it yet, save KIOI), so that would leave out everybody but KYA. And yet I can't pin it as being on KYA either. It most definitely was not on KFRC, which, as you said, opted for all-live except during holidays when they ran things like HOR&R.

Oddly enough, I can't remember either, David. I remember listening to AT40 often during their first few years when I was still in LA - it was on KRLA - the station Casey worked at (live and local) just prior to AT40. But I guess I had outgrown the show by the time I hit the Bay Area in 73.

The only clues I could "google" were: (1) from the Bay Area Radio Museum, that AT40 was on KYA-FM in the early 80s; and the link below which incorrectly states that it was first heard in the Bay Area on KDEO. That station (known as "Kaydio Radio") was in San Diego. So I'm not sure which SF station ran AT40 in the 70s.
