CASEY KASEM SHOUT-OUT

Listening to classic AT40 Countdown from Feb 9th, 1974 this weekend....Casey welcomed on board new affiliate WDXY Sumter AND gave a shout-out to WTMA Charleston. A Casey Shout-Out Double Shot!

I always enjoy that part of the classic AT-40's. It reminds me of the stations I was listening to at the time. I also like hearing Casey mention stations I later worked at and thinking, "Little did I know!" Plus, I enjoy thinking about how much has changed. Almost none of the stations mentioned on those vintage countdowns are still top-40 today. This week's 80's version was from '88, and I believe there was exactly one station during the entire 4 hour show that still does top-40 (KJ-103 in Oklahoma City).

One of Dick Bartley's early "oldies" shows was being carried by a Roswell NM AM station. I called in one night. Had to wait close to half an hour, but Bartley finally picked up. Recording my call for playback moments later, I requested The Buckingham's Kind of A Drag, and announced to the whole world the calls of the station carrying the show.

I think just about everybody that's old enough remembers Casey Kasem. When I was down in south Florida back in the 70's I remember hearing him on Y100, 96X, ect... With all the changes in radio over the years it's not very hard to believe that most of the stations you heard him on as well as anyone else have changed formats especially most AM's with the shape they are in today. I have always been a country music person which wasn't always easy in south Florida back in the 70's. If you were a country music fan back then all south Florida had was AM stations, no FM for country music back then with the exception of WIRK in West Palm Beach which started with a country format in the 70's till today. But no matter what your favorite format was you still listened to Casey Kasem's Top 40 count down.
