Casey's American Top 40

Listening to XM7 and XM8 playing the old "American Top 40" shows each week, made me wonder who all of the local "AT 40" affiliates been? I can recall KFJZ-1270AM in the late 1970s, KHYI-"Y-95" in the late 80s, and I believe KMGC or KDMX carried it as well at one time. One 1984 show mentioned KIKM in Sherman as an affiliate as well.

I think I've heard almost every old Casey's Top 40 Texas Affil mentioned over the year or so I've been listening to it. It's great radio to hear those broadcasts again sans commercials. Every now and then XM will take an old heritage station from a major market and broadcast one of its days from the 60's or 70's. It's absolutely classic and highly entertaining. Not long ago they broadcast a day of programming from the old KILT-AM in Houston from the 60's. It was hilarious.

When they featured the old KFJZ-AM a couple of years ago on XM6, they asked me for some old bits and airchecks I had...which they did indeed use! I believe they've done a KLIF tribute as well, but I must have missed it.

Indeed on the AT40 rebroadcasts...talk about really taking you back in time, no modern references or hindsight, just pure radio, crystal clear and in stereo, the way it once was!

If I am not mistaken, during the Shadoe Stevens regime, it aired on KEGL in the late 80s too.

Heck, which do you think of more when you hear Casem's dulcet tones? AT40 or Scooby Doo? ;D

AMERCIAN TOP 40 aired on KXOL 1360 Fort Worth in the 70's until they went country in Springtime '76. Then KLIF 1190 picked it up airing it on Sundays.
KIKM 910 in Sherman did air it as well in the mid 70's on Sunday nights.

Somewhere around here I have a copy of the very first AT40 done in the Summer of 1970.

When Watermark was bought by ABC, all of the Watermark archives were sent to Dallas and stored for a time in the room across from the office I worked out of. On the shelves was all the LP's and 45's used in the production of AT40 up till that time (late 80's). Also on the shelves were all the jingles plus multi-track MASTERS of things like not only all the AT40 shows, but Watermark's Elvis Presley Story. At one point all of it was moved into the basement and one day there was a big cleaning out after a basement flood. I was asked to help out and looked on in amazement as many of those historic tapes were in boxes that had been flooded with water. Many were tossed out but I grabbed the master to the Elvis show and put it away. It appeared undamaged but was also within seconds of being unceremoniously tossed. I don't know what ever happened to that box, and in retrospect, I wish I wish I'd asked Robert Hall to let me keep it - but I didn't...and that is the rest of the story.

I don't recall Y-95 ever carrying AT-40. They did, however, steal "Casey's Top-40" from KEGL a year or two after Shadoe took over for Casey on AT-40. I think they also had Rick Dees. I always remember tuning in KEGL for AT-40 (Sunday mornings 9 AM to 1 PM if I remember correctly), and Casey's Top-40 was on KEGL when it first launched. The Eagle stashed CT-40 in the 6 AM to 10 AM slot on Saturday mornings until Y-95 took it and put it on Sunday mornings opposite Shadoe in 1990 or '91.

I think I heard it on Mix last Sunday... Right Lisa?

The current version of AT20 is nothing like the old American Top 40...yes it still is on MIX....has been for 10 years at least.

"After substituting for Casey Kasem numerous times in 2003, Ryan Seacrest took over as host of the venerable American Top 40 radio pop music countdown show in January, 2004."

I'm sure I used to hear that on KISS on Sunday mornings back in 03-04.

Wait a sec. I don't believe "Shadow Stevens' was a "REGULAR host of AT 40. He substituted a few times , THEN he had his own countdown syndicated show that competed against Casey. Casey didnt give up the reins until Ryan Seaweed took over.

I knew I wasn't smoking crack... even back in the 80's ;D

Thank you, Wikipedia!

Since anyone can post ANYTHING on Wikipedia, you cannot always trust it...in this case; however, it is true. I remember the events as Wiki has it posted....and was at ABC when Casey took the show to new competitor AMFM and was reunited with the name AT40.

Man this thread is taking me back to when I first got into the biz. Casey's Top 40 came on vinyl and AT40 with Shadoe Stevens was on CD. That was 1989-1992.

The audio quality of that vinyl was superb but it would warp slightly in the back of the DHL truck if the temp got above about 80 degrees.

I still have some mid-late 70s AT40 and Robert W Morgan's "Special of the Week" on LPs somewhere......(of course they came home with me after the show ;)

I found one AT 40 on vinyl at Half-Price Books many moons ago, dated March, 1981 (still have never played it,) and recently found some Rick Dees Top 40 Countdowns from the fall of 1984 (probably some still in the racks at the Half-Price on NW at Central...pricey, tho, at $10 each, but that's 4 double-sided albums worth in one jacket.)

WODS/Oldies 103.3/Boston runs a 2 hour version of the 70s AT40 Sat nights from 11pm to 1am.

Back in August, they ran a 1978 episode that happened to feature the very first Long Distance Dedication.

Part of my post from back in August:

It was from a young teen named James from "a small town" in Louisiana. He fell in love with a young girl (Desiree) from the same town but she and her family ended up moving to Germany because her father was in the military and "that's where they sent him". Not long after, the song "Desiree" by Neil Diamond came out and reminded him very much of their relationship. So, the dedication was...you guessed it...Desiree by Neil Diamond. ::)

Casey invited listeners to send in their own LDD's and "all we ask is you request a song that was a hit".

The snail mail address (no email back then) is/was:

AT40/Long Distance Dedication
Box 8170
Universal City, CA 91608

I think someone oughta write to that address and see if it gets to current host Ryan Seacrest. But address the letter to Casey. Maybe it would pi$$ off Seacrest. ;D :D

That Wikipedia article mentioned something about the old AT40s running as part of a 'classic' 70s or 80s package on various stations across the US in the last few years. That'd be a cool thing for KLUV to run. (It'd sure beat the 100th airing of "The History of Rock and Roll.") Of course, the XM ones are preferable for listening as they have NO commercials! (A quick 2 hr 20 min runtime for the 3 hour shows; 3 hrs 18 min for the 4 hour shows.)

Be sure to request "Shannon" about a !&#$ing dog dying........(if you never heard that Casey outtake, you MUST!!! The Rick Dees rebutal to it was almost as funny...I'll put it up on a website if anyone need to hear it....)

I have some old Wolfman Jack countdown albums that were actually sponsored and distributed weekly by....The Armed Forces.

Around the Rock N' Roll Hootchie Koo era.
