Castiglione for 2 more years, can you believe it!

He has always been awful, especially since he decided he needed a catch phrase and started inserting "can you believe it" no matter how forced it was (and that was virtually all of the time). At least he's not the No. 1 and really hasn't been even though he stabbed Trupiano in the back and got to be undisputed top dog for the Year of Geffner who, if it were not for John MacLean, would rank as the worst ever.

I don't mind Joe Castig but Geffner was horrible--forced on
them by Lucchino. Do like some announcers even if they are 'homers' like Cleveland's Tom Hamilton--swing and a drive..a-wayyy back--and GONE! (Back to back jacks--back to back HRs)

Joe Castig is a sweet man. He didnt stab Trup in the bag. That was all Larry wanting his boy in there then leaking stories about Trup to the papers. When Castig was honored by Sox Joe refused to go on field unless Trup was there.

I shall stand corrected and apologize for my ill-formed assumptions. Now that I think about it, I have heard that Casiglione has been quite generous with his time for prospective announcers, and what the heck, catch phrases are what it 's all about.

Forgive me Joe. I was dead wrong on this one.

P.S. The fact that Castiglione was the guy Joe Morgan wanted to talk to after he was blown out speaks even bigger volumes.

I can be a real jerk at times.

Gosh, two more years of Joe is sad news. He should have been gone years ago, terrible voice, overly excited on routine plays, mis-called action. Yikes, why?

Also, scary that he teaches his style to students so they can be like him. Where did the world go wrong?

I've never understood the haterade for Joe, especially on a board and in a region that values heritage to a fault. The guy's had the same job for 30 years, he's obviously doing something right.

I like Joe because he doesn't sound like everyone else. He's unique to us. It's comforting to hear him on the broadcasts.

For those of us who have interacted with him professionally, it's known that Joe is a total pro.

Joe is a solid #2 announcer and served that role well with Ken Coleman and Bob Starr.

When Coleman was fired ( and I suspect it was a financial decision ) he became #1 with Trup being #2.

Trup got hosed because of Geffner. Trup may have had the single best call of the 2004 playoffs.

swing and a drive way back, WAY BACK, HOME RUN jump on his back fellas David Ortiz just made sure there will be a Game 5 this afternoon at 5 PM and the Red Sox live for at least one more day.

The thing about Joe is he is finishing season 31 and he will pass Ned Martin next year.

But seriously, could you imagine having to listen to this buffoon every game?

I tend to like Joe with his personality etc but inevitably like all of us he's getting older and his vision is prob deteriorating. It could be time for a Gil Santos type of situation--retirement. Recently John Sterling of Yankees radio did an it is high, it is far, it is gone description of a homer. Only it wasn't a homer, it was caught, I believe, and he had to quickly retreat and correct himself. I believe Michael Kay on Yankees TV got the description right.

Trupiano was notorious for his crack-of-the-bat 'way back' calls on balls eventually caught by the shortstop, which used to drive me to distraction, but he was always given a pass by folks who didn't like Castig but personally liked Trupe, a theme which seems to color a lot of threads.

Bostonians in particular, and New Englanders in general, seem to like ideosyncratic play-by-play guys. I remember friends from out of town who considered listening to Johnny Most a "WTF? moment" but Most was a much of a local icon as any announcer this market ever had. One the other side of the coin, I find Dave O'Brien's bland homogenized-for-a-national-ESPN-audience call to be competent, but nothing out of the ordinary.

My wife, who came here via Las Vegas and Los Angeles, finds Castig unlistenable. I find him occasionally grating, but I've grown used it it after all these years. In my opinion, Martin and Woods were the best, although I grew up listening to Gowdy who I remember as great, but that's seen though the filter of a lot of years.

There's a mean-spirited crack that 'nothing in life became him so much as his leaving it.' A variation of that around here would be that nothing improves the performance of any radio personality as getting fired, with the esteem-scale depending on who did the firing.

Regards,
TSB

How much do you think Castig makes a year? probably a decent living...half mill?

I am guessing around 200K - Joe also teaches at Northeastern.

Obie may now make more than Joe C at the WEEI level - They pretty much split the innings but DOB calls the 9th now which is usually given to the #1 guy.

Give Joe C his due, as he has called Red Sox radio far longer than anybody. (1983-201?) - Ned Martin was radio (1961-1978)
