-Really pains me to say this, since Jennifer Foxx is a very nice lady and one of the few people in Burlington radio I actually like, but what on Earth is going on at Star? I think it's great that a Burlington station is embracing "This is How We Do It" and "Killing Me Softly," because I feel like there's a demand for those songs. And you can play those songs and bill it as a "party weekend." But when I hear a sweeper telling me it's a "party weekend" into a Switchfoot record, I scratch my head. And when I hear a sweeper referencing the concept of a mom doing her kid's homework over the "party weekend," I ask "what's this station trying to do?"
Pick a niche, Star. Either you're adult contemporary (which means no Montell Jordan for you), or you're a Movin'-style Hot AC, which isn't the best choice for Burlington, but an interesting niche (which means you bury all imaging in which you talk about family stuff.) I know that this station is trying to bury the 80's, but that's the point of AC radio. You cover a long timespan, because there aren't many consensus safe records. And that's to say nothing of the fact that your sister station is CHR. Older females don't all want to listen to oldies. This feels like a gaping hole in Burlington radio right now. I'm not sure Star is doing the best they can in reaching women who are between 95 Triple X and Kool 105.
-Champlain stations are always good for a laugh. I flipped over Cruisin' just in time to hear a sweeper telling me that I was hearing songs "you can sing along with." Into "Pick Up the Pieces." Yikes.
-I didn't actually listen to the game, since I was at it, but I caught the postgame wrap on 101.3 ESPN after BHS/Rice. Props to them for covering the game, even if it was over a cellphone. Chris did a good job with the stats after the game.
-You know what's really funny about Triple X? Ben Hamilton wouldn't put me on the air because of "how white I sounded." Then I hear the nightclub promo in which Joe from the morning show tells people he's going to school "all y'all" on the stripper pole in St. Albans. Either he's changed his opinion on how important it is for white people in Vermont to sound "black" on the radio, or he really had a problem with my personality. At least Kiss 108's jocks come off as sounding like dumb Italians when they try to sound African-American, which makes sense for the market.
-I like the new promos on WVMT, voiced by Jeff Thomas (with whom I caught up in Seattle recently.) They really make the station sound like an actual news authority. Hey, sometimes the power of suggestion works.
