Catching up on Burlington

-Really pains me to say this, since Jennifer Foxx is a very nice lady and one of the few people in Burlington radio I actually like, but what on Earth is going on at Star? I think it's great that a Burlington station is embracing "This is How We Do It" and "Killing Me Softly," because I feel like there's a demand for those songs. And you can play those songs and bill it as a "party weekend." But when I hear a sweeper telling me it's a "party weekend" into a Switchfoot record, I scratch my head. And when I hear a sweeper referencing the concept of a mom doing her kid's homework over the "party weekend," I ask "what's this station trying to do?"

Pick a niche, Star. Either you're adult contemporary (which means no Montell Jordan for you), or you're a Movin'-style Hot AC, which isn't the best choice for Burlington, but an interesting niche (which means you bury all imaging in which you talk about family stuff.) I know that this station is trying to bury the 80's, but that's the point of AC radio. You cover a long timespan, because there aren't many consensus safe records. And that's to say nothing of the fact that your sister station is CHR. Older females don't all want to listen to oldies. This feels like a gaping hole in Burlington radio right now. I'm not sure Star is doing the best they can in reaching women who are between 95 Triple X and Kool 105.

-Champlain stations are always good for a laugh. I flipped over Cruisin' just in time to hear a sweeper telling me that I was hearing songs "you can sing along with." Into "Pick Up the Pieces." Yikes.

-I didn't actually listen to the game, since I was at it, but I caught the postgame wrap on 101.3 ESPN after BHS/Rice. Props to them for covering the game, even if it was over a cellphone. Chris did a good job with the stats after the game.

-You know what's really funny about Triple X? Ben Hamilton wouldn't put me on the air because of "how white I sounded." Then I hear the nightclub promo in which Joe from the morning show tells people he's going to school "all y'all" on the stripper pole in St. Albans. Either he's changed his opinion on how important it is for white people in Vermont to sound "black" on the radio, or he really had a problem with my personality. At least Kiss 108's jocks come off as sounding like dumb Italians when they try to sound African-American, which makes sense for the market.

-I like the new promos on WVMT, voiced by Jeff Thomas (with whom I caught up in Seattle recently.) They really make the station sound like an actual news authority. Hey, sometimes the power of suggestion works.

Good "state of the stations" report Will. I haven't been up there for a few months and when I was up there last I didn't have a chance to do a full accounting of the dial.

It sounds as though Star doesn't really have a focus. That has long been a problem in Burlington radio.

The Champlain stations always have been and always will be a joke. Silberberg along with his "yes man" Rowe haven't a clue and don't make money by good programming but by cutting cost to the point where it almost impossible not to make money. What they haven't realized is that if you invest in a professional staff and give them the resources to put good programming on the air you can make a lot more money.

XXX is an interesting one. You always used to hear about that station being a major market sounding station in this tiny little market that churned out major market air talent. You really don't hear much about them any more. Not sure why that is. Is it maybe that the product is stale, or that Ben has lost his touch? You would probably have more insight on that one.

Sucked? That's funny. If by sucks, you mean "well liked and respected by everyone in the community, except the owner of the stations, who can't, but would have been if he wasn't the owner, be fired", then yeah.... sucked.

Buffoon. Fitting the title is "yesman".

Burlington has traditionally been a very good sounding small market, and yes it has been a lauch pad for many great talents. However, there just aren't that many good people going into radio these days so I suspect Burlington is feeling the effects.

The market doesn't pay well and Burlington is an expensive place to live. Plus, it is over radio'd and under-revenued. And the ownership has gotten pretty shaky.

It's pretty much that way all over in markets large and small. That is the state of the industry.

95 Triple X is now streaming...welcome to 1999, guys.

And Planet, "Stereo Hearts" next to "Moves Like Jagger?" Have you heard of artist separation?

I haven't posted for quite a while. I don't know who this "Will" guy is but he has such a case of sour grapes it isn't even funny. He hates both of the CHR stations in Burlington and always takes potshots at both. Isn't this the same guy who's just a Wedding DJ? As I look over his old posts it's clear he hasn't been on the radio in years and--oh yeah---supposedly HIS choice. Right. He has constently put down individuals by name in his rants. His ego knows no bounds. It's fairly easy to point out other people's mistakes when you are doing nothing. try doing it and then let all of us put YOUR effort under a magnifying glass.

I'd offer you another glass of ego Will but apparently you're already full of it.

First of all, Will is the most entertaining poster on this board...bar none. I may not agree with everything he says.."welcome to 1999 guys"...is funny...

And what do you have against "wedding dj's" a-s munch? We're all just squirrels trying to get a nut..., plus, "wedding dj's" get paid well. That is all, as you were..

Former Triple X punching bag back in my BHS days.

I don't hate the stations, I just criticize what I don't like about them...and I praise what I do like.

Isn't this the same guy who's just a Wedding DJ?

Bar trivia. It's a lucrative, growing business. And do you know how much wedding DJ's make? I wish I were a wedding DJ.

It is. Why should I move? I live in Boston and I live comfortably. I don't see anybody around here hiring...so why try? I'm busy with my existing work as it is. What am I going to do, talk over song intros somewhere in Worcester or Manchester on a Saturday afternoon for four hours for $12 an hour? That's not worth my time, and offers little to no opportunity for professional growth.

He has constently put down individuals by name in his rants.

A lot of Burlington radio people are not nice and deserve to be criticized.

His ego knows no bounds.

Neither does your hyperbole.

It's fairly easy to point out other people's mistakes when you are doing nothing.

Yeah, I'm unemployed and I live under a bridge. For Chrissakes, guy.

try doing it and then let all of us put YOUR effort under a magnifying glass.

White Horse Tavern in Boston. Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday. I am "doing it." Break out your glass, Sherlock Holmes.

I'd offer you another glass of ego Will but apparently you're already full of it.

Your last post directed to me was a lot nicer.

Who was the guy from WBZ who used to do bar trivia over in Coolidge Corner at the pub across the street from the movie theater?

I love the White Horse in the summer when the doors/windows are wide open. Next time I'm in Boston (Allston), I'll have to check out the trivia. "Who was the only man to pinch-hit for Ted Williams....and why?"

Morgan White. He still does events. Check his calendar at triviamorganwhitejr.com.

Carroll Hardy...but I couldn't tell you why. And I'm as big a Ted devotee as you'll meet.

Ted fouled a ball off his foot, couldn't continue with 2 strikes on him. Hardy had to pinch hit to finish the at bat.

And the *only* reason I know that silly fact is that when I was a kid, it was written up in the bio for Hardy in the 1962 Red Sox yearbook, which I devoured to learn everything you'd ever want to know about players like Ike Delock, Don Schwall, and Hal Kolstad.

:D

Hmm, one wonders if VOX will be treated better than the above mentioned individuals? Will, there are often several sides to every story. Look at how many people are still in that building in the Fort after many years. Mary, Rich, Jen Fox, Jamie Dennis, and even Chip Hobart, who returned after the Vox takeover (working fill in under several different alias', on pretty much every station there) And, I believe about half of their sales force has been with them for nearly 20 years. NOT to mention the "behind the scenes" personnel that the public is not even familiar with, office folks who remain. Also, think about the people who left under previous management, and happily returned after the Vox takeover, and have stayed on for several years and counting. Remember, sometimes angry people are the most vocal. Sometimes, people are more quick to be vocal when they are unhappy....because they have the time. The folks that are content, are too busy for this place, because they are busy working...because they have a job they enjoy. I'm just sayin', it saddens me to see how bitter you are based on the opinions of a few unhappy individuals. Have you ever even been inside the building? There is a true feeling of family there....that's not often found in the radio biz.
