Take a deep breath, put on your reading glasses, refrain from yawning, this is gonna be a long one! First of all, a shout out to Tom P., Rob Grayson and Pam Yates for checking in with me after my first post. So nice to hear from you guys.In all of the 15 years I spent in Memphis, the radio community was like a family. There was never any animosity between competing jocks.Ron&Steve talked about my hole in one on the air when I was at 'RVR', even using my name, Prestigiacomo used to list my birthday even though I was long gone from FM100. What great years those were. Since finding this site, I've spent the last couple days going through every post over the last two years. I read with great interest about the ousting (not outing) ;D of Steve Conley, Steve Butler, Tom Prestigiacomo and Bev Hart.
I had already heard of the news back then, but it was interesting to see the reaction from fellow broadcasters and fans. Having worked at three different stations, and fired from all three, I felt their pain, but knew that each one of them would land on their feet. That's all you can hope for when you're in this business. When I was at FM100 we had great numbers, but the switch was made to bring in Mr and Mrs Olson's little boy. Ron took my place in the fall of 1982. No hard feelings, Ron and I have played lots of golf over the years, and three years ago, I sat in with Ron and Steve during their 9-10 hour. Steve and I have been friends since those days and we chatted last December when I was in town. I spent some time with Steve Butler during my visit too. We worked together for five years at WRVR and he remains one of my best friends. Nice to see him back in radio where he belongs. He deserves more than riding the board at WREC,but that will come soon I'm sure. Speaking of persons who deserve more, Melody Meadows is one of the best five female broadcasters in the US. Somebody put her back on the air instead of wasting her talent on doing traffic. God, did we have a ball at Oldies 98, (KOOL 98.1) (Target 98) (Star 98)while it lasted. I also get the idea after reading some older posts that Jerry Dean is much reviled in Memphis. Jerry and I go back a long ways. We worked together in Sioux City, Iowa at the BIG 62 KMNS, and he got me a job in Fort Walton Beach, FL when he was OM of stations in Birmingham and FWBeach. We had a couple run-ins. Once when we were both driving and ended up getting rear ended in Sioux City totalling both cars, and once in Las Vegas when he was at KLUC, when I visited and we were going out to dinner. My wife was getting into his beat up old chevy, and sliced her leg on a piece of metal protruding from his rear fender. 13 stitches later at Humana Hospital in Vegas, we ate ribs and drank lots 'O' beer. Call him what you may, I call him friend. Although he never returned my email when I told him I was open to come back and work afternoons at WRVR.
And for Pam Yates, I left WNOE in New Orleans in 1991, worked at Sunny 93 in Tupelo for three years, went back to Memphis for 2 years, then off to Richmond, VA, Carbondale, IL, Columbus, MS, Fort Myers, FL and now I've been in Bismarck, ND for ten years. That's my resume and I'm sticking to it.
