Cater Lee

Cater Lee (of KTVK fame) has appeared here in Los Angeles on KCAL 9/KCBS 2 as a reporter this week. She uses her real name (unlike Liz Habib)

Yes, I noticed Cater this week too. She was here in Palm Springs in the late 1980's. I recal her being on in L.A. for a short time a few years ago too.

I believe Liz Habib is her real name, but it doesn't matter since we know who the **** she is. ;D

Some time ago, before Heidi left Your Life A to Z, she had Cater Lee on as co-host for the day. If I remember correctly, Cater was working in the LA area on health and family related issues and I believe she said at that time she was doing reports on KNX radio.

To those who saw her on KCBS/KCAL, were the reports on health issues or just general assignment reporting?

I remember at one time Ch. 3 had Cater Lee, Gil Tyree, and Mike McGee. Love how it rhymes!

General, heres a story of hers :

I'll never forget the gigantic sweeps feature Cater did "are you having a bad hair day?" 5 minutes of valuable broadcast time to talk about how to make your hair look better.

Scintillating reporting.

I'm still missing brain cells from that puff piece.

OK...I've seen someone on this board claim Liz Habib was not using Liz Habib as her on air name several times now...don't know what and when this was supposed to have occurred but here is a link to Liz Habib's bio from Fox 11 in LA. Hopefully this clears up any issues.

She wasnt when she first got here, I had forgot that she went back to her real name.

Post where I pointed out her "new" name :

Fair enough...the only reason I brought it up is because the issue of Liz Habib's name came up again in the opening post of this thread. Thought there may still be some confusion.

Btw, I have no connection to or affiliation with Ms. Habib...it is just that name usage on the air sometimes is out of your control. For instance, I and some of the people I currently work with have been asked if we would consider changing our on-air names. Not that we have names that sound like a body part but the proposed change just reflects an image that the station wants.

We all declined and that was the end of if...but they could have forced us to change our names if they wanted...after all the station owns you and your image.

How many "Tony Evans' " have been in Phoenix radio?
Since the days of KRIZ and KRUX, there've been a few.
Perhaps there's an abundant number of souls who happen to be named Tony Evans?

I've always believed that some, if not all (TV or radio) talent choose to use a "handle" for security, if not vanity.
Call me naive.

Diana Sullivan?
Perhaps a maiden name or a name from a close relative, key being "security".
Kent Dana...never mind, could be a cheap shot.
Same as John Hook.
Mark Curtis...off the scope.

But Liz Habib?
Phoenix is known more for it's southwestern flavor as far as demographics.
Jimmy thinks that Phoenix has a much larger latino influence as opposed to a middle eastern one.

Point being that perhaps the "consultants" requested you change your on-air name, but why change it to reflect a demo that doesn't really register (Liz Habib) as opposed to one that does (Elizabeth Sanchez)?

I'm not saying you're wrong any more that I'm claiming to be right.
Just curious.

It's a practice much more common in radio than it is in television. Apart from a change of first name for aesthetic purposes (would you rather watch Cameron or Chester?)for one talent, and the insertion of an Hispanic ancestral name as a middle name for another, I can't think of anyone I've worked with on the air (and that includes Liz Habib) in Phoenix television in the last 21 years who was using an outright made-up-for-television name.

And despite the link back to the original article, I still can't find what Liz Habib's "other" name was supposed to have been. No offense to the original poster, but my bet is still that you saw Lauren (who went by "Wendy" here in Phoenix) Sanchez on the same station. A name switch...and then a switch back...would be a credibility-killer....even in L.A.

There was a story posted some time ago on either the KCOP/KTTV website or possibly on YouTube and if I remember correctly, Liz Habib did the story as Liz Warren. (Don't know if that is her cop husband's name (if they are still married) or maybe she had a thing for her former cohost at KTVK, Mike Warren)

Certainly agree with Mr. Haggerty that name changes are MUCH more commom in the radio business than TV.

Having said that, I have worked with several female reporters and anchors who were using maiden names or middle names instead of the name on their official ID. The male reporters and anchors I've worked with mostly use their real names...the two I know of were using shortened or altered versions of their real last name. (I will make up an example...Alan Greenspan...might go by Alan Green.)

The name changes suggested to me and two of my coworkers was an effort to give a more hispanic spin to the stations line up. For me it would've meant the usage of my mother's maiden name...for the others it would've meant using their maiden names. I don't know about the others but I declined because I felt it would've been dishonest and as a journalist I need to have truth on my side in order to expose those not being truthful...might sound silly but there is enough compromising going on in the newsroom...gotta at least stay true to yourself and your own ethics.

As for Liz...name change real or imagined...my opinion is...I'm not real sure it matters in the end.

In the interest of tracking Phoenix alumni --

Mike Warren, I believe, is now the weeknight anchor for the Fox affiliate in Austin, TX.

Liz Habib initially used her name when she arrived to LA, then changed her last name to Warren. I remember Steve Edwards asking her about it on the am show and she stated Warren was her married name. I don't know why she went back to Habib. She doesn't seem as comfortable in LA as she was in Phx.
