Catholic group to buy Toledo radio station?

Not surprising. I just wonder if they will move the 1560 transmitter site out of that small backyard they have on Arlington Ave.

I'm really surprised that they have not moved 1560 to the 1470 site, and tried an application for 10k-day, 5k-CH, 500-night with two patterns, so they can cover the city better. Their present 2 watts at night with their present array is a "why bother".

But I imagine the land on Pickle Road is getting a little expensive, and it might be better to sell that site and move elsewhere.

Annunciation Radio of Toledo has been trying to acquire a Toledo area radio station
for over a year now. If they are trying to buy 1560 in Toledo, the price may not
be right and/or they have yet to raise the one million dollars they need to buy
and operate 1560. That was/is their fund raising goal according to this T.B. article below.

Two hours on Sunday seems like a baby set to me. But money is very tight now
so its no surprise that they haven't been able to reach their fund raising goal after
a years time.

The Toledo Blade published this story on Annunciation Radio of Toledo one year
ago from today. They wanted to have their own station last year:

Mike Learned heads up the venture in Toledo. He's praying to have an FM in Bowling Green...hopefully sometime later this year or next.

I'm Deacon Mike Learned and I am the president of Annunciation Radio. As has been stated, we are running a two-hour program every Sunday for the last 6 months. This was done to help us learn the steps we will need to run our own station.
To answer the question that people seem to be asking, we are not planning to purchase 1560 AM. We do hope to have our own FM station sometime in the not too distant future, but that depends on God and the FCC. When that does happen, we will do our best to let the world know.

Well, for one. I don't believe its going to be 107.7fm, you can hardly get it in northern Lucas county let alone The West and north side of Toledo.

From what Deacon Mike says, it sounds like they have their hear set on an FM(to be toe to toe with WPOS I assume).

So, I think this is where 103.7fm could come into play, CC spun off 107-7 and I believe they may spin off 103.7(just a guess) Urban radio could come in and purchase 103.7fm and spin off 97.3 to Annunciation Radio. Would Cumulus want to sell one of their under performing FM's. I'd say at this point its anyones guess.

If 97.3 would be made available to Annunciation Radio that doesn't mean they would
buy it. The price would have to be right.

97.3 is currently WJZE licensed to Oak Harbor....not that far from Sandusky.
Since they are doing well overall with its Urban R&B format and is giving Swanton's WJUC a run for its ratings, I don't see that happening.... I'm thinking (guessing)that Deacon Mike might get a frequency somewhere bewteen 87.5 and 92.1. When all of the analog VHF channels go silent next year in favor of digtial channels, that would be the right time for Mike to get a frequency there (with full power)without the worry of getting bleedover from Chanel 6's audio out of Columbus ....and I also suggest he should consider using 107.7 in North Baltimore as a repeater for the Findlay,Tiffin,Carey and surrounding areas....lots of people in the region visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey(east of Findlay) ..especially on August 15th which is celebrated on the Catholic holyday calandar as the Feast of The Assumption of Mary and 107.7 woud be right in its back yard when scores of pilgrims from as far as Detroit,Philly and NYC come to this little community yearly.

Think how many people they could cover by buying both 103.7 WCKY-FM, Tiffin (soon to be Pemberville) AND 98.1 WDFM in Defiance... They'd cover almost all of NW Ohio, except Toledo itself would be under a weak signal.

I'm kinda surprised they haven't thought about an LMA, like the group leasing 1560 from Cumulus or maybe 1470(then moving The ticket to the FM).

That wouldn't be a bad idea. Leasing 1470-AM (the former top 40 WOHO now WLQR-AM)considering its sports talk format move to FM along with a CP to operate at night with reduced power would be the best bet over the half-broken WTOD facilities.

If Deacon Mike is reading this I would give the folks at Cumulus a call and consider either leasing WLQR-AM or even more so buying it outright. Also I would seriously consider buying the North Baltimore FM (WPFX) from BAS and using it as a repeater while by the same token people can tune to the FM when the AM powers down...and yes an audiostream would be a given...I hope Deacon Mike lets us know how he is doing with this venture. My prayers go with him.

BAS doesn't own WPFX. BAS bought it from CC back in July, then turned around and sold it to Toledo Radio Inc, headed by Dan Dudley and Phil Dombey. D&D used to own WRWK, selling it to Cume-less in 1999 for $5 million.

Toledo Radio Inc paid approx $1 million for WPFX, which is presently dark until Toledo Radio Inc gets the official nod from the FCC Nazis. I hear Toledo Radio Inc is looking for a new studio location as it could not use the studios that WPFX was occupying with WCKY.

Not sure if a new studio location has yet to be secured.

As for WLQR & WXKR... I don't see Cumulus flipping 94-5 to FM Sports. Should they?? I think so. But I don't see them doing it within the next 1-3 years.

1470 is kind of a crappy frequency. If you move it, then you fall under all sorts of new conditions of protection to other stations, cochannel and adjacent. But the temptation is that the land on Pickle Road is getting expensive, and with the hospital to the north I could see an offer by St Charles to get the property. I question if the proposed patterns they have in their CP will cover any geographical areas that will provide a payback.

IMHO, the 1560 would have a better case to build for getting back to 5k service, as well as a nighttime service that would cover Toledo. Question is, will the costs to construct be more than they could bring in over, say, the next five years? Who knows.

Cume-less should trade 1470 to Swaggert for the 730 in BG. Construct a new 1470 down in B.G. and then move 730 to Luna Pier and shoot right over Toledo. Oh well, just a thought.

Okay, here's another question. We all know that WTOD used to be 5kw (now down to 500 watts daytime.) Since Deacon Mike has expanded his program to noon hour weekdays....does he have his eyes closer on WTOD? Would Cumulus be willing to make the neccessary repairs to return to 5kw with reduced power in the evenings if they are willing to have it LMA'd by Deacon Mike?

Then there's Tower 98 on the other side of the state line. Is this station making a dent in Toledo since it competes with 92.5 Kiss FM?

AS for WPFX...how much longer before the STA runs out Toledo Radio?

Would CC consider a frequency swap for PFX with CKY-FM? I doubt it...surely they want to rule Toledo.
