Catholic radio to go on air in S.A.

Catholic radio to go on air in S.A.

San Antonio soon could have its first two Catholic radio stations — including the most powerful one in the United States.

The Midland-based La Promesa Foundation, a private Catholic nonprofit foundation, is working to buy two stations in the area, one to broadcast in English and the other in Spanish, foundation president Leonard Oswaldsaid.

Negotiations and fundraising are continuing for the purchase of the second station, which would be built up from 9,000 to 100,000 watts, he said.

If they're looking at an Educational FM frequency for this "second" station, could Trinity University be considering the sale of their radio station? After all, KRTU is about 9,000 watts (plus or minus).

I haven't seen any applications from KRTU, and it would appear that the station they're talking about is KWCB 89.7 in Floresville. It's currently running 9,000 watts (as a Class C3) and has a construction permit for 50,000 watts (Class C2). But the station has filed for an upgrade to C1 status, running 100,000 watts from a site a little east of Pleasanton. Height is 183 meters (about 600'). Proposed coverage is at: www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1127614.html Nothing really spectacular, but definitely an improvement from what they started out with back in the early '90's. FCC records show that the latest upgrade application, filed back in May, is still pending approval. If this really is the station in question it looks like a sale really is still being negotiated, since no application for ownership change has appeared.
