Caught! 2 accused in beating John Friskillo

For those that are relative newcomers...I have known John since 1964...when he worked at WJQS in the King Edward Hotel in Jackson. We would often meet in the "Coach and Six", the lobby oyster bar and have a few brews and oysters on the half shell. He was a different, but insightful character, as anyone who knows him will attest. We have kept in touch for many years until the mid 90's when he kinda disappeared. But, he is a legend in the annals of Mississippi radio, and I hope there are others here that will comment. Thanks JBI

I'm glad they caught the low lifes that beat him. What kind of scum beats up an old man in a wheel chair? I used to listen to John Friskillo all the time. I don't remember him from WJQS but I do remember him in the 80's when he played adult standards on the the old 1590 AM (WYHT or WZRX) The last time I heard him he was at WVIV 93.9 before they went rock. My memory is a little fuzzy but it seems he worked for the old WKKE 1180 back when they played adult standards in the early 80's. Doe's anyone else remember some other stations he was on? He seemed to hop around all over the dial usually after a format change.

John worked at WJNT doing morning news for a number of years before he went to WVIV. John was a super nice guy to work with. I pray he recovers soon.

This is , indeed, a sad end to John's life. As stated in an earlier post, I have known him for many years. John's greatest pleasures included a sip of great wine,
and sharing a radio story from the past...he worked with many legends in the business, and I will not try to identify them, as those who remain know who they are, and those who are gone, know too! What else is left to say? God Speed, John, and I hope to see you on the other side! J Boyd ( Who he also referred to as the Chief)....JBI

When John was at WJQS in the King Edward, he and Al Wiman taught me control room basics...patch panels, board op, etc. (1958) When Mike McRee (WTYX) bought WVIV John came with the deal. In addition to his impeccable news reading in the morning, his biting sense of humor and old radio stories endeared him to the youngters on the staff. For trivia...His name on WJQS was John Jay. And, he stayed with that station for many years as it morphed from "block/MOR' programming to country.
He was certainly one of a kind. Gonna miss him.
Bob Rall
(Al Wiman went on to KFWB, KNX, KMOX and KMOX TV)
