CBC Licence renewal

Changes in a nut shell, provided by Montreal media commentator Steve Faguy here ~> http://blog.fagstein.com/2013/05/28/cbc-licence-point-form/

The big one? Starting Sept. 1st (limited) commercials will be allowed to be aired on Radio 2 & Espace Musique. Also, a requirement to expand the the playlists (I haven't listened much to Radio 2, since the 'big changes' a but a big complaint by the newbie listeners, was the repetitive play lists).

The CBC had an easier time when they were the one doing the licensing.

It appears the net effect of these regs will be to drive people to other broadcasters. I wonder if the private broadcasters pushed for these changes to make the CBC less competitive.

I'm only speculating here, but I've got one-and-a-half words for you: Quebecor.

I'm sure Quebecor has nothing to do with the CRTC telling the CBC to expand their play-list, nor restricting the running of unlimited commercials until the 4th year of Radio 2's new licence. I'm thinking the latter has to do with the CRTC letting the CBC know, that perhaps it would be better to ease in the public on the idea of full on advertising on Radio 2. When you read between the lines, the CRTC may have misgivings about CBC's handling of Radio2 and are concerned that the public may mistake Radio 2 for just another commercial station.

And Yezikno, you're on to something and more. If advertising rates are based on BBM/PPM numbers and Radio 2's numbers are as low as they are in various markets, how much revenue will Radio 2 be able to generate? And how will the rates be determined, since Radio 2 is a national broadcaster with presence in multiple markets?
