CBC Radio One now on FM in four more cities

FM transmitters are now broadcasting CBC Radio One in the following locations:

Edmonton CBX-2-FM 93.9 MHz (Class A)
Calgary CBR-1-FM 99.1 MHz (Class B)
Saskatoon CBK-1-FM 94.1 MHz (Class A)
Winnipeg CBW-1-FM 89.3 MHz (Class A)

CBC Radio will continue to broadcast on the traditional AM stations in those cities - CBX 740, CBR 1010, CBK 540, and CBW 990.

I wish this same approach had been used in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal a number of years ago.

I couldn't agree more. I live in Ottawa now. I was in western canad when cbc was at 910, so I don't know how the signal was, but honestly, even with a 100 KW FM signal, I still get drop-outs downtown. Even on a bus in downtown Ottawa, I can still get decent AM reception. The western am signals, (540, 740, 990 and1010) are absolute powerhouses, especially 540....You can drive for 2 days straight on the trans Canada highway through Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and hear it with no problems.

Those 4 FMs serve as repeaters. All those office buildings cause electrical interference to 50 kw AM signals, even a giant like 540.

Speaking of CBC Radio One the Corporation has applied to the CRTC to move CBA-1070 in Moncton to FM. If and when that happens, the Northeast US will lose its last over-the-air link to the CBC.
