CBC Radio Online streams now all 96k or better...

Several months ago I had discovered that the Vancouver "32K" stream of CBC Radio One had been bumped up to 96K - but was still listed as "32K" on the pop-up window that had both 16K and 32K stream choices - on the CBC Radio website (www.cbc.ca)...

Now, all 31 of the Radio One streams are 96K mono... so, much better sound but no option any more for dial-up users. The 32/16 choices were there to offer dial-up users reliable, listenable streams, with the 32K choice for better sound while conserving bandwidth on the mostly talk streams. Still no stereo option for Radio One.*

Radio Two has 5 streams available, one for each time zone (except New Foundland) and a choice of either "Low" (54k) or "High" (192k stereo) streams. When I checked, just now, only the Atlantic "High" stream was working... "Low" was working for all five streams. The five streams have urls showing them as 128k, but perhaps an upgrade is in progress.

Additionally, there are four Internet-only music streams: Classical, Jazz, Canadian Songwriters, and Canadian Composers. All are stereo and high bandwidth... bit rate doesn't display on the CBC player but their urls show them as 192k.

Also available is "Radio 3" which is Internet and Sirius (ch 86) only... One national channel of new music from indie artists, with a "stream mode" option which has 4 sub-channels: Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, Electronic. All stereo and 128k.

* If you can find it, the Canadian Forces stream (from Europe) carries a lot of CBC programming in high bandwidth stereo, asuming the program in question is recorded in stereo... "Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap" - last I checked - was in mono... a shame given the excellent music played on his show.

I really hope CBC upgrades its FM Radio One stations to stereo. There are few urban areas in Canada that don't somehow receive a Radio One station on FM, even if an AM signal is also available. Most of Newfoundland is the main exception to that.

re: CBC One Stereo... When I heard the Randy Bachman show on the Canadian Forces network (which is stereo, if the program being broadcast is itself recorded in stereo) it was mono. Booo. So I emailed the show... got an email back from Randy's wife saying that they recorded the show in mono (she thought) because CBC One isn't broadcast in stereo.

Hope that changes... soon!
