CBC to flush out Wheel and Jeopardy

I always thought the CBC kept a couple of American shows around just to enjoy the revenue. For a while they had The Simpsons and Fresh Prince of Bel Air in the 5-6pm hour, if I'm not mistaken.

At least with Jeopardy, there's the connection that Alex Trebek is Canadian and once worked for the CBC and Radio-Canada as well. He says he spoke French with no noticable Anglo accent, so he worked for both language services.

Of course, even though Canadian fans will still get their Vanna and Alex fix on another station (whether Canadian and/or American), there are some who are acting like they're running around with their heads chopped off, saying that once they leave CBC, it's over. See many of these responses in this Facebook entry:

It's hard to say where Wheel and Jeopardy will end up. In Ontario Wheel started out on Global and Jeopardy on CFMT, both moving to CFTO and other Baton stations in the early 90s. Jeopardy stayed there until CBC picked it up, but Wheel bounced over to OMNI.2 and later to A-Channel before moving to CBC. Elsewhere in Canada I know they aired on ASN at one point, and on some private CBC affiliates. Others had to rely on U.S. stations on cable.

A few possibilities for them include Citytv, OMNI, NTV, 'A', the Jim Pattison stations, CHEX/CKWS, and TBTV. I doubt CHCH, Global, or CTV would pick them up as they already have their own strategies for the 7PM hour. In any event I think their coverage in Canada will be a patchwork of stations combined with U.S. stations.

I'm wondering: Since these shows appear to have such a loyal following in Canada, why doesn't the CBC, if it wishes to emphasize local content, launch Canadian versions of Wheel and Jeopardy? Either one or the other has been remade virtually everywhere in the world, often with considerable success. Besides, even though Jeopardy! is hosted by a Canadian, aren't many of the questions just too U.S.-focused for Canadian audiences?

Maybe for the same reason there are no English Canadian versions of other popular game shows. In recent years, "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?" and "Deal or No Deal" had special Canadian versions, but after a few weeks, they fizzled out, mainly as the networks preferred to simsub the American version, rather than have a homegrown version. In the case of "Millionaire", the Canadian version was the highest rated program in CTV's history, yet they refused to bring it back after a trial two-episode run.

It was done for French Canada, with TQS (V) running a local version of Wheel and TVA doing their own version of J!

It seems like it wasn't long ago that the shows first began airing on CBC. I don't normally watch "Jeopardy", but I remember Pat making the announcement on "Wheel" that CBC had joined the family.

I'm also wondering if perhaps it wasn't the shows' marketing direction that prompted CBC's exit. I do not have access to CBC's broadcast, but it's only in the past year or so, that the producers have started inserting more sponsor endorcements into the program. From the occational time I was able to see Wheel on CBC, I remember them having to slice out the (verbal) commercial endorcement that usually preceeds them putting the $10,000 space on the wheel. So coming back from a break, all CBC viewers would hear & see is the announcer screaming $10,000 dollars which appeared out of context, given that they didn't hear the verbal announcement that preceeded it. Then there are the Wheel Watchers contests (probably not open to Canadian viewers). Then towards the end, there are additional sponsor blurbs prior to the closing credits. This led me to wondering when they recently had their Maxwell House Coffee "Feeding America" promotion... whether CBC flashed a disclaimer of some sort, or saw fit to "chop" the shows' close... when Pat & Vanna would do their Maxwell House banter.

Anyhoo... maybe I'm splitting hairs, or maybe a CBC viewer could chime-in and correct me if I'm wrong :-\

All I'm saying is............could the shows content be becoming "too" American for their liking ???

In recent years I've highly disliked Wheel being promoted as "America's Game". As a Canadian viewer that feels a little insulting. Is it not our game too?

I'm not suggesting it should be "America and Canada's Game", I think the slogan should be eliminated altogether.

The correct words would be "North America's...", although I'm not sure how that would apply to Mexico. :D

"North America's English-language Game"?

I vote for "Definition" and "Mad Dash".

I vote for a English version of "Des chiffres et des lettres" - aka "Countdown" on Channel 4 in the UK. Prizes aren't big (in the UK - the ultimate prize is an Encyclopaedia set, IIRC), but the show brings forth a challenge that would be easy to implement and promote.

That would beat the top prize on CHEX's Reach for the Top in the mid-90s - a CD.

Recently, Aussie broadcaster SBS One launched their own version of the show, "Letters and Numbers", which uses the same format as the UK "Countdown". The Wikipedia article does not say what prize winners get, though continuing champions can play up to five games, with the greatest winners competing in an end-of-season tournament of champions.

The format has also been implemented in Spain, South Africa, Italy and Croatia.

I don't doubt that there will most likely be a game show or two filling the 7-8 time slot on CBC, but it'll most likely be CBC produced.

It should be noted that Jeopardy often has Canadian contestants. Someone from Ottawa was a champ a few weeks ago. And someone from Montreal who actually appears on a TVA program was a champ last year. Both contestants had to answer some U.S. history questions and the latter contestant also is primarily French speaking.

Oddly, Who Wants to Be A Millionaire does not permit Canadians to participate, even though numerous Canadian stations air the show. When I was a contestant a few years ago (winning $16,000) I had to bring my passport to prove my U.S. citizenship. I'd like a friend of mine from Toronto to try out but he can't.

Someone above says there was a two-week Canadian Millionaire a few years ago on CTV so maybe that's why Canadians can't be contestants on the Merideth Viera show. Although it's clear that show is not going to be brought back
