CBS 19 and 43 The Block Off Dish Network

I didn't get it the first time nd I still don't. What exactly is a "block"?
Channel 43's branding. It was used years ago back when it was a true independent station. Raycom resurrected the brand.

It was actually used around 2002 through '05 when they switched to UPN 43. They were still affiliated with UPN back then too. WUAB was simply Channel 43 during its true independent years.

"Plays favorites" I get. "The Block" I don't.

I don't get it either. Must have something to do with a "block" of talent or programming they were putting together after the loss the Tribe contract in 2002. Or could be a reference of being on/about your block, in reference to a street block as in "he walking up the block" or "taking a walk around the block", so maybe they are saying that they are your "block" and no one else can come closer to your news/program needs? Here's what Wikipedia says, leaves me hanging too, doesn't explain why the name:

"With the loss of the Cleveland Indians broadcast contract for the spring of 2002, WUAB rebranded itself as "43 The Block". A local and national casting call for on air talent, as well as a hand drawn logo, helped define The Block as fun, new, accessible and irreverent. As a nod to a long history of fun local TV hosts ( such as Big Chuck and Little John ), The Block used hyper local topical humor to promote the station, syndicated programming and Cleveland. An aggressive schedule of interstitial video segments, starring local comedians, would draw viewers to second and third run syndicated comedies and talk shows. ( The very first "Block" segment consisted of the newly hired Block Hosts delivering a fruit basket to the Cleveland Indians Management to thank them for their roles in getting them a job. ) Cleveland comedian Mike Polk was among the first Block Hosts that contributed segment ideas and content."

I totally missed those interstitial videos. I never knew they existed. When The Tribe moved so did I, to FS Ohio.

I remember there was a contest in late 2001 or early '02 where WUAB had viewers audition to come in and be co-hosts for the station. Two of the ones who were in the promo for the auditions ended up as one of the original four personalities - Cody and Jack (a female). There was also a woman named Qui Qui and Mikel. Neither lasted long as a woman named Kai was added. She didn't stay long either.

Mike Polk joined 43 months after The Block first showed up. He would end up outlasting all of the hosts on that station with him being the only holdover after the switch to UPN 43 and later My 43. He did resurface for a while after the Block's comeback, but he's now on FOX 8.

I may have it, but maybe not. Channel 43 has been around much longer than Channel 19. And at the time The Block name was adopted, wasn't 19 and 43 already allied? If so, 43 is the block, and 19, a chip off the old block! They should call 19 "The Chip", LOL.
