CBS chief Les Moonves became a trending topic on Twitter after the fall season press conference today. One quote that attracted attention was that he said Trump was good for ratings. He also said CBS is relying less on advertising and more on subscription revenue. He said he's more about making money on the back end than the front end. So this is about investing in brands and content that can make money for the long term, which is exactly what investors want to hear.

More Info on the new CBS shows:

Fall
YOUNG SHELDON Prequel spinoff based on Sheldon Cooper's childhood
9JKL A divorced actor lives in the same apartment building as his parents and married brother
ME, MYSELF & I One man's journey told in three periods of his life
SEAL TEAM Military drama about the elite Navy unit
S.W.A.T. Updated version of the TV series and feature film
WISDOM OF THE CROWD A tech innovator creates a app to help solve crimes after his daughter is murdered

Midseason
INSTINCT A former CIA operative who is lured back to his old life when the NYPD needs his help to stop a serial killer
BY THE BOOK A film critic and father-to-be decides to follow a spiritual journey toward a more moral life by using the Bible as a guide

Moonves also said he was offered and passed on American Idol. He said it didn't make any sense for CBS.

With regards to "Young Sheldon," it's obviously a spin-off from The Big Bang Theory, and goes back to Sheldon's childhood. Moonves says it's a very different show from Big Bang, but, he says, "it works."

Did "Man With A Plan" and "The Odd Couple" get cancelled or are they coming in mid season?

9JKL is a horrible title. Was it created by the same people who came up with $#&! My Dad Says?
Is 'Elementary' mid-season? CBS renewed it.
Looking forward to Young Sheldon. Suspect Laurie Metcalf and June Squibb will have big roles in this show.
I guess Me, Myself and I is a spin-off of Life in Pieces.

Star Trek Discovery will appear on CBS on September 24th

Star Trek: Discovery will debut on CBS, and CBS All Access, Sunday, Sept. 24. The second episode will be available on CBS All Access that same night, after the 8:30 premiere on broadcast.

After premiere night, new episodes will be available on-demand weekly on Sundays exclusively for CBS All Access subscribers in the U.S. The 15-episode season will be released in two chapters. The first eight episodes will run from Sept. 24 through Nov. 5. The season will then resume in January 2018.

The series was initially slated to debut in January 2017, then May, before making the September schedule. Bryan Fuller stepped down as showrunner but remains an executive producer. CBS showed a clip of the new series at its upfront presentation in May.

CBS All Access costs $5.99 a month.

According to CBS, “Star Trek: Discovery will follow the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.”

I'm amazed at the legs on Blue Bloods. I used to watch it while exercising, because I found it to be one of those just-OK shows that I didn't have to concentrate on...noisy elliptical, and all that. The cast is good, but the plots were pedestrian at best.

Lets see.... Back in the 70's, we were promised that Cable would be free of
commercials and that was the reason for the cost/fee. We now have a
repeat of history..... CBS is wanting to charge a fee for programming that
they could broadcast over the air.... for free. They will start out commercial
free, then tell us they cannot generate enough revenue so commercials
are inevitable...... No thanks, I'll pass on Star Trek Discovery AND CBS
All Access........

I subscribed to CBS All Access for awhile because I couldn't seem to get around to watching The Good Wife on Sunday, or remember to DVR it. Lazy I realize. Then when the show ended, I quit CBSAA. I've been thinking of signing up again for The Good Fight (sequel to Good Wife), and the new Star Trek.

What I'm assuming these types of services think is that they can coax you into signing up, and even if you don't use it, you'll forget to unsubscribe because it's only a monthly charge to your credit card, and you fail to notice it. Well - I remember, and only use these services when there's something I really want to see, and there's no other way.

And if they ever decide to add commercials, I will cancel all subscriptions.

BTW - Not to give any support to the evil dastardly cable companies, but I don't recall that they ever promised basic cable channels would be commercial free - they never were, not even in the beginning. Premium cable (HBO, Showtime, etc.) ARE still commercial free.
