CBS 3 (KYW-TV/DT) Anchor Marc Howard to retire

I enjoyed Marc over the years on both 6 and 3. I think he brought sincerity and class to the local news. I hope he enjoys his retirement.

It would be nice of WPVI to acknowledge him, but after the way the treated him when he left I doubt they will mention his retirement.

He was never a good fit for the station.
Still he was much better than James "Jim Gardner" Goldman on his old station.

If I remember right he was brought into to be 3's version of Jim Gardner, the head anchor, since Gardner may be in his 100's when he decides to retire, and Howard wanted to be a lead anchor. Then Larry Mendte (sp?) became available very shortly afterwards, was brought in, and Howard went right back to the backup role, with a multi-year contract.

First--so what if Jim Gardner uses an air name? He began doing that in Buffalo on orders of his boss. It is done all the time and is no big deal.

Marc was hired to be the 11 pm anchor at Channel 3. As I remember reading in the paper, he was one of those who suggested he go to the 4 pm show when Larry Mendte became available. The stories I read indicated Larry would anchor the 4 and 6 pm shows; Marc began on the 4 pm show after roughly nine months as the 11 pm anchor.

I'm curious as to why he's suddenly retiring. I figured he'd re-up for another two or three years but not for five. Is it possible he was concerned his contract would not be renewed? Had he not left WPVI in '02, would he still be there or would he have left there by now?

Any speculation on his replacement?
