CBS 4 NEW MUSIC THEME

It's a package originally composed for WBZ's sister-station, KCBS, called "Viacom News Package I". A clip can be heard here:

http://www.southernmedia-nmsa.com

The new music sounds much more "newsy" than the old package, and much more traditional than any of CBS4's recent packages. The old package was much more hip and lively though. It had more energy. It seems like this change is part of an overall effort to get "back to basics" in the newsroom, and be a little less flashy. Maybe it will sound even better if it's used to introduce Jack Williams on the 6 and 11 newscasts.

Yup, Ben "Jack Williams" Cartwright to the rescue.

I saw the music in during the 12:00PM news today. It just didn't seem to fit well at all. Compared to the flashy music and introduction to the news, the new dull and quiet music doesn't sync up to the flashy and graphic-intensive opening.

So, how many different changes does this add up since early 2004?

1) WBZ 4 News w/orangey graphics and the CBS eye located in the 4. Used the Groove Addicts music after the Michael Whalen music was retired the year before.

2) CBS4 News w/the same orangey graphics, same intro, same Groove Addicts music. Only difference is implimentation of new logo.

3) CBS4 News w/blue graphics, new intro in blue, but still the same Groove Addicts music. I believe that the bottom titles changed to a plainer style a few weeks ago, but I won't count that as a full change.

4) Now, it's CBS4 News w/blue graphics, same intro, but new generic Viacom music.

Add this to a revolving door of talent, the Worcester bureau that I can't figure out, executives leaving as CBS corporate brings in their own, and you'll see that this station is a mess. What's next?

1982 Eyewitness News by Edd Kalehoff was the Best. Now "THAT" was a cool theme!
I've got the entire theme and Sports cue in it's entirety somewhere.

The BEST news open theme WBZ ever had?

I'd say it's a tie,
between "Today's 4" and the "unknown theme" (both from Gari communications), that was used in the mid 80's.

But I have to say, I always like the "heartbeat" pulse in the Today's 4 music.

And BTW, I think that the best news themes seem to come from Gari Communications. They are STILL, using the "the one and only" news theme here in Lubbock TX...

Lemme tell ya, the "Circle 4" theme of 2000 was very very nice...then 'BZ changed...again. That was sad.

Especially if the newscast is identified by a voice-over as "Live from New England's first television station, this is 'WBZ/CBS-4 Eyewitness News'."!

As I remember it, there were two. Which one? The tide soap box open, or the one with Red line subway car wooshing bye?

But I don't believe WBZ ever used that one...

Re: The BEST news open theme WBZ ever had?

Red line.

WTF. Bring back Liz and Jack, and your station will RISE FROM THE ASHES.

I think the guy's name was Hoss, short for Horace, lol? But they need more than a theme, a sense of who they are would be nice.Seven knows, and I guess 5 does too. Four, not so much.

--------

It's the theme that E-Dub just posted the Video of. WBZ used that theme by Edd Kalehoff for at least three years.

Let's hope not. What they need is some good looking TV bunnies and
the ratings will jump.

Yes, of course - Hoss.

I have an idea, for the open, maybe they can have an MBTA map burn a hole in the middle to reveal all the anchors sitting side by side on horses!
LOL

Yup, that one was a keeper!
Too bad they didn't keep it for very long, huh?

Ok, I see where the confusion is... That was a cool open for 82, but cheezy by today's standards.

Let me explain:
They switched from the "One 4 all" open to the "Today's 4" theme about that time.

But sometime in 83 or 84, they had the same theme re-worked, with a cool graphics animation. And I beleve the theme music was re-recorded by Gari. I don't have the open anywhere, but if you go to Southern Media website posted earlier, you can hear the newer version. I remember that it was all in blue. A globe came up from the bottom with a pusling red "heartbeat" line (like what you'd see on a heart monitor), and then picures with the anchor team would come floating up as the announcer read their names off.

It was REAL cool!

Then they went to the next Frank Gari theme around 86. That one was also pretty good, and they re-worked thier open a couple of times again. And this time, it appeared they using computer animation from here on end. I would also point out that they seemed to use that package for their imaging on the station. Everything got the same treatment, from station ID's to People are Talking and Evening Magazine!
