CBS AX FALLS

Dear Mister News: Thank you for your insightful and thoughtful post. Of course, it's easy to compliment someone who espouses the same viewpoint as yourself. With that said, I am hoping, hoping, hoping that soon we will see some sanity return in the form of regulation for Energy, securities, mortgages, etc and of course, the media, which apparently most on this board are either in or used to be in. I really hope that it's not too late for Radio and Broadcast Television for that matter. That would indeed be a shame. Good luck to you current and former Broadcasters!

I know a bunch of people that still work at CBS. They tell me that the staff at every station except QYK is nervous for their job. Apparently the new GM is making things really uncomfortable for all the employees over there. I know for a fact that Orlando at WLLD and all of his staff is afraid that their station is going to be sold. They are also afraid that the new OM will try and change up everything they have been doing. It is a tough time in that building. I'm glad I'm not in the middle of it.

Before CBS sells WLLD, you'll see Clear Channel selling WFLZ. Where the hell did you hear that? Of all the nonsense stuff that I read here, this must be the #1 stupidity of all. Let's get real.

Rumors on Wall Street at the end of last week pointed to the possible sale of the entire company (not just radio) with Time Warner being batted around as a *possible* buyer. It's pure speculation at this point, but if this were to happen you can bet that the radio division would ultimately end up in the hands of someone else (most likely a private company that can accept the slow growth of radio in exchange for the still very rich cash flows).

Remember, the vast majority of these companies are still HIGHLY profitable; the problem is that they are not growing revenues or profits on a year-over-year basis.

Radio is a great and fun business. Maybe more fun "back in the day", however, a great business. The type of action that we witnessed recently at CBS isn't exclusive to the radio business. It is happening everywhere in all industries. Unfortunately, radio is doing away with the one thing that it has over all other media, LOCALISM and familiar friends on the air.

Actually, MeanSpirit, you're correct. This new OM scares me. I'm not sure, but I think he's not a Hip Hop lover, and just may decide we need to go. It has my short and curlies, even shorter. The new GM hasn't said a word to me, and we're all seriously in fear.

Please help! Say a prayer....

I feel you bro!!

Wow... What happened to the days of WLLD having the $million October? I can't believe those guys would be in fear. What a shame!

Hell, I remember the days when WLLD was WISP with transmitter in Bradenton a class A with a nice easy listening format and was live a local most dayparts..... Ahhh the good old days.

I remember those days as well.

Was their tower at that time near Cortez and 14th St W? They were and still are liscensed to Holmes Beach, wonder how many people in Holmes Beach actually still listen or consider it their "home town station?" :)

SBE1: do you know who owned WISP 98.7 in those days?

How many people listened or considered it the "home town station" when it was WISP? It wasn't a major force in the Sara - Brad ratings.

As a johnny come lately station at the time and all of 3,000 watts (or was it 7,000 watts?)

, no doubt it was not a big contender for the whole market; the Dove which was then still 100,000 watts at 103.5 with tower in Snead Island certainly put out a more listenable signal over the entire Sarasota-Bradenton market.

That being said, I am willing to be they (98.7) still had more listeners in the city of license than they do now; somehow, when I think of Holmes Beach, I don't think Hip Hop!

drt

With all due respect DRT, in today's radio environment you can ask ask 10 random people about "city of license" or their "hometown" station and 9 out of 10 will have no idea what you're talking about. But I hear what you're saying... it's pretty funny to think that Holmes Beach is even represented as a Tampa Bay hip hop station as most people don't have a clue to where that city is anyway.

I remember when 98.7 was WAYP "Broadcasting on program test authority" for nearly a year!

Tower was at the intersection of Cortez Road and 34th st. w.

Which is where WISP ended up transmitting from .. actually around 3000 blk Cortez Road West to the rear or Cox Chevy... about 321 foot tower... studios were in the Bank of America building in downtown Sarasota...
Tower location was first used for old two way radio transmissions (VHF Low band) in the early 60's.. used by private funeral homes / ambulance service ( put a red light and a siren on a hearse and there you were in the old days...) and doctors...Guess you could say REAL pre 911 center. My mom worked part time as dispatcher in early 60's..owned by one of the first owners of 102.5 WYAK in Sarasota...Harold Bische... He just gave me and old pix from their studio around 5th ave and 13 street in downtown Sarasota I think... Tower was actually located in the middle of a junk yard... That tower from what, the late 50's or early 60's (approx 280') is the one currently used for WSPB on City Island. They (WSPB)obtained it to upgrade the old WSPB FM 106.3 around 1970 or so...

Side story about the old Cortez Road tower and the Bische family... Harold's son Joe and I used to climb up it .. that's how I know it was actually 318 ' with 3' for the top tower light.. we did it in our pre teen years and withOUT belts..(ok, no one said we were smart or that anyone's parents knew...) .. during the summer of our junior/senior year, Joe was trimming a palm tree @ his house.. fell out of it and has been paralysed (sp) ever since... still lives in the sight of the tower too... I see Harold just about every Sunday at church...

later...

enjoy the day...

That's some great info Walt. I didn't know that tower had such a great history. Did anyone use the tower after WISP left? Is it still there & being used for anything?

To answer another previous question, the reason why WISP 98.7 never really took off I think is because they were trying to be a slightly younger alternative to WDUV, but of course never made a dent because WDUV was way too popular in that area. Plus WWRM moved to the much stronger 94.9 frequency which was another nail in the coffin for WISP.

You ever realize that only you old radio people, populate this board? The "way back when" stories...don't they get old? In fear of the new OM? How simple? Culotta is my brother and will do a great job. Our exited OM, Ross Block is an awesome man, and will go on to do more great programming.

I'm not worries, nor has my faith in my company waivered. Economic strife as challenged the entire industry, but the station "formerly known as WISP" lives on and well. Count us out, when we're out....

You'll recognize it because we'll look like all of you out of work, nearly out of work, or should be out of work, net junkies.

Forget this thread, get back to discussing radio of yesteryear. You remember, when you were all relevent.

You RKOldies are So Sad....In the words of OUR 44th President of the United States (who called this failing show/station a few times, on his trek to realize a dream, no longer deferred) YES WE CAN!
