CBS BLOWING UP 'FRESH' TO SIMULCAST WBBM-AM NEWS

The AM is still in hiss-O-ramic sound.

WSCR 670 has been free of the interference since early May.
How long will CBS continue to pollute their own product on 780?

The extra upper-end audio response on the FM makes the spots seem way too bright.
Either the microphones need to be brighter or the spots need some rolloff on the upper end.

What kind of radio enables you to hear "hiss-O-ramic sound?" You certainly can't hear it on a Toyota radio.

[1] I luv it - )))Hiss-O-Ramic((( sound!
Yes, CBS please turn OFF the I-Crap Noise Generator on 780!!!

[2] I'll be listening to 105.9 myself here up in the NW Burbs. Love the clearer sound!

[3] Do the engineers of stations such as WBMM/WCFS(?) really read this board?
Perhaps send them an email or call them directly to get their attention?

99.9999999% of all "non-HD" radios in existence. :p

Uh huh. Another fine example of why nobody takes you anti-HD zealots and your hysterics seriously. 99.9% of radios produced in the past 20 years don't have the AM frequency response to allow anyone to hear the noise.

WBBM-AM is the #1 station in Chicago. If this were the issue you guys claim it is, that probably wouldn't be the case.

The only radios I have which cannot hear the hiss on AM 780 is the RS Accurian and the Kenwood whatever auto radio in my wife's vehicle. But that is because they are the ony radios I have purchased since this cynical scheme was foisted upon AM,
and designed to make AM sound impossibly muffled.

I have avoided most radios which have the frequency response of an Atwater Kent type G horn speaker.

I have a hard time accepting that frequency range when I listen to the 1927 Atwater Kent, but that's what it is.

Most of my radios are newer than 1935 or so, and most that I listen to have response well above 15 khz on AM when tuned correctly.

On the car radio, a 1972 Motorola AM/FM I did another wee little RF/mixer alignment/peaking and nope, still can't center tune
all the hiss away. If I had to, REALLY had to listen to WBBM AM, I'd simply use some of the -30 db ear protectors that I have
many left over from work. They don't make muffled audio any worse, and they do cut out the hiss.

Thanks for the concern.

Thanks for helping clarify my point Tom. Normal people don't replace the stock radio in their new Toyota with a 1972 Motorola.

Well, it is a stock factory radio for my 1972 daily driver of the moment.

I replaced the original stock factory AM Motorola with this one.

I keep the old cars for a number of reasons, having actual radios is an important consideration.
I'm not very satisfied with modern "radio emulators", which cannot actually be "tuned", but merely
select arbitrary stopping points with no respect for selecting a useful portion of bandwidth to afford
full fidelity.

Who would want a dumbed down radio with audio intentionally muffled by design?
I have a tone control which is variable, and it works just fine if I need to shear off all the highs.

Pre-muffling AM audio seems like intentional sabotage during design, and I will not bother with any
such radios.

Okie dokie. Suffice it to say that's not normal.

"Normal people" don't give a fig about AM in HD, especially as it relates to listening to a news format. They're looking for news, traffic and weather and maybe the sports update. WBBM-AM isn't #1 because it's in HD, it's #1 because it provides the product listeners want, whether they're listening to a 1972 Motorola or an 2011 Cheapasonic. Ask any ten (non radio geek) people about HD and you'll get a blank (WGAF) stare in return.

Agreed. All I'm saying is the hysteria about IBOC hash is WAY overblown.

The listening public can't hear it. They can't hear HD because nobody has the radios and they can't hear the hiss because nobody has a radio wide enough to pick it up.

Only a deaf person can't hear it. It's intrusive and it clobbers first and second adjacent stations. It limits the range of stations from neighboring markets which may not matter to you if you live in Rogers Park, but which matters a lot of you live in Kenosha or Gurnee or Michigan City.

Put simply, the hash sucks and saying that it doesn't matter is a form of living in denial. Reminiscent of those guys who used to dispose of their hazardous waste by pouring it into a well in the back yard.

Yeah, comparing it to "hazardous waste." Just more anti-HD hysteria. And you guys wonder why nobody pays attention to all of your bitching.

Oh I think they're paying attention as less & less AM stations are bothering to use it.
