It's a dump, inside and out, knock it down.

But wait! the Kennedy-Nixon debate took place there, a pivitol moment in the history of television and our country!

Who cares, knock the place down. If you ever spent more than a few hours in there (or worse, worked in it), you would be the one operating the wrecking ball.

Being a Sox Fan, I won't comment. All I'm saying as far as McClurg is in with the new out with the old. Viacom is building state of the art facilities for 'BBM on State Street (tentatively, could find another location at some point).

There comes a time when reality must take a priority over sentiment. 'BBM had a long stay at 630 North McClurg but technology advances demand a different kind of facility.

I was more upset about NBC leaving the Merchandise Mart if only because of broadcasting's heritage at the location going back to the days when Chicago was a hub for radio network programming. I wish there was a way for the broadcast museum to have transported Studio "A" somehwere for safekeeping.

I even get more nostalgic about the old studios at 20 North Wacker. Those studios played an important part in the history of Chicago broadcasting from the days of WENR-AM and WBKB right through the days as a temporary facility for Chicago's UHF stations as they signed on.

But progress is progress. At least ABC totally rehabbed 190 North State and is still there.

In relation to what's going on in Chicago, Viacom is also building television studios for KCBS-TV/KCAL here in L.A., vacating the Columbia Square studios on Sunset Blvd. You can check the California TV board for discussion.
Edited by ShawnHill on 07/19/05 10:21 PM.

Besides interning at WMAQ-TV at the old Merchandise Mart studios, I interned at 630 N. McClurg Ct. as well. The B96 studio is a former closet. The building is a dump. There is still the stench of Giselle Fernandez in the women's washroom. When they tear it down, watch for the Super Rat population in Streeterville to increase by millions.

Reason to keep the place as an historical landmark:

Siskel & Ebert, Phil Donahue and the most important show ever on television, "The Mike Ditka Show" all taped in studio one.

I had the "opportunity" to visit 630 N. McClurg about 10 years ago. Knowing that no major repairs have been made to the building since then, it floors me that the building still has an occupancy permit. It's a perfect example of a historical building NOT worth saving.

Totally agree -- it's a classic.
